International geographical borders separate sovereign nations from each other. This makes it possible for countries to know their political and legal jurisdictions.
Whereas some international borders are heavily militarized due to confrontations between neighboring countries or for other reasons such as to prevent people from crossing, some are very friendly and it is even difficult to know that there is even a boundary.
For instance, parts of the United States-Mexico border is heavily fortified but countries in the schengen area in Europe have a very friendly border system.
Apart from the friendly and unfriendly nature of international borders, there is also the issue of complexity. By complexity, we mean it is not easy to identify where a specific border crossing is located between countries. This sometimes confuses tourists and travelers.
A very good example of a confused international border is between India and Bangladesh. Between these two countries, there is an Indian exclave in Bangladesh that contains a Bangladeshi exclave which again contains another Indian territory. This territory is located at the Cooch-Behar District between the two countries.
There are 102 mini-exclaves belonging to India splattered on the Bangladeshi side of the border, and 71 exclaves belonging to Bangladesh peppering the Indian side. To further confuse things, inside many of those exclaves, there are other, even smaller exclaves belonging to the other country.
In Africa, Lesotho, a high-altitude landlocked country is completely encircled by the Republic of South Africa (RSA). It is very difficult to distinguish some parts of Lesotho and RSA due to the complex nature of the arrangement of the territories.
At the Dutch-Belgian crossing, the little town of Baarle has left many people confused many times. The Belgian portion of the town is known as Baarle Hertog. It stretches inside Baarle-Nassau which belongs to the Netherlands. In fact, the official border between Belgium and the Netherlands runs through living rooms, yards and cafés. So for example, it is possible to sit across a table having a cup of coffee with someone who is actually in a different country. That is how confused the area is.
