The bullying from the school yard has moved into the boardroom. A 2014 survey by Workplace Bullying Institute found that 27% of Americans suffered abusive conduct at work; another 21% witnessed it; and 72% were aware that workplace bullying happens. Many top corporations aren’t taking adequate steps to prevent it. The number of US workers who are affected by bullying – summing over those with direct bullying and witnessing experiences – is 65.6 million, the combined population of 15 states from the central northern tier to the Gulf of Mexico.
Despite these staggering numbers, the government has created very few safeguards to stop it. When Bullies Become Bosses, a documentary, aims to help bring awareness to this serious and widespread issue that is fast becoming an epidemic in America.
“I am creating a documentary to expose workplace bullying, showing not only the abuse I endured, but the abuse endured by so many American workers. Through this documentary, I hope to bring this problem to light. I hope to let people know this is a real problem that we need to address as a nation. With awareness, education, and ultimately, appropriate legislation, employees will be able to work in a safe, bully-free environment,” says Richard Santiago, the director.
This project was started as a cathartic way for Richard to deal with the emotions of his own experiences with workplace bullying. But to keep this project going, Richard is in needs of funds.
