An Australian website that allows personal pictures, photo identification, complete names with full personal details including school addresses of underage girls, can be updated by any young boys or men. Because of this, more than a thousand young girls have been cyberbullied.
According to Australian newspapers, a gang of pornographic blackmailers have taken pictures of girls at more than fifty different schools since last winter.
The website allows its users to select or propose a high school they want to exploit, alternatively, they can give the name(s) of the girl(s) they are interested in, along with what school she attends. According to the investigators, the website contained thousands of names and addresses that were yet to be exploited.
How Does the Website Work
As soon as a name was uploaded on the ‘X’ list, members of the website community could ask questions about X and post related information about the target. However, the prized possession was the naked pictures, either posted there for everyone to see, or traded for other nude images. According to the police investigating, in one such case, a user gave away more than one hundred images in exchange for a single naked picture of the victim. One user had targeted a girl since 2011.
Most students were reportedly unaware of their images being uploaded to the website. Relatives/friends that had requested the website administrators remove the images, were either bullied by the website community or site administrator(s), with most cases seeing the complainant become the target.
Sharna Bremner, an equal rights advocate, runs a campaign called End Rape on Campus. Bremner spoke to a local news channel explaining the serious nature of the website.
According to Sharna, a trend to find naked photos and information of those girls who were living nearby, instigated an idea of the ‘ease of access,’ something that brought the visitors to this website.
The Website and the Australian Authority
The website, which is not hosted in Australia but elsewhere, makes things more difficult, according the Australian Federal Police. According to a statement made by an Australian Federal Police spokesperson, they are currently not in a position to shut the website down, but are pursuing and arresting its local users.
According To the Law
According to Australian law, distributing, using and accessing child pornography is considered a major offence. People who are caught distributing or using child pornography, face a fifteen year prison sentence. The police department from New South Wales (NSW) stated that many of the Australian users are themselves, young adults.
The NSW police department have reached out to many government bodies and law enforcement agencies to talk about this matter, spreading awareness working with the Department of Education, Association of Independent Schools, Catholic Schools and the Office of Children’s Safety commissioner.
