Mount Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a country which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” After lying dormant for 400 years, it has reawakened to much fanfare, erupting frequently over the last six years. On Friday, 26th of Feb it erupted twice, spewing volcanic ash and smoke that rose as high as 3,000 meters; Indonesian authorities placed the area around the volcano on the highest alert level since June 2010.
The Indonesian government has declared a 3.5km-wide radius from the peak to be a red-alert, high-risk danger zone. Hundreds of farmers who were living nearby were relocated about 2 years ago.
