When Maria Angeles Duran, the 54-year-old mother of four from Galicia, Spain, tried to sell pieces of her solar real estate on eBay at the price of €1 per metre square, the ecommerce website prevented her from fleecing their users. Now Duran has gone to court, insisting that she owned the Sun and therefore was within her rights to sell parts of the all-important star.
Duran quoted a loophole in the United Nation’s Outer Space Treaty to prove her claim: “Outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty,” the treaty says. “Nothing about individual ownership!” Duran says.
In 2013, Duran began selling plots of the sun at a price of €1 per square metre on eBay in Italy and Spain with the promise: “buy new object, unused, unopened, undamaged. Shipping is free” – and in return buyers received a diploma of acquisition. In 2014, she sued eBay for €10,000 to make up for the 600 sold orders that she never cashed out on. A Madrid court will hear her case in July – it may not rule on Duran’s ‘legitimate’ claim of ownership, but on whether she violated eBay’s seller agreement.
The sun “officially” belonged to her since 2010, and she even threatened to bill solar power users, when she had the celestial body registered in her name at a local notary office. She got the idea of owing the celestial body from an American man who had registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in the solar system.
The document issued by the notary public declared Duran to be the ‘owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometers’.
She told the Daily Mail in 2010 about her unusual claim: “There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first”.
She continues to sell sun “plots” on her own website.

She would not get away with charging people money for solar devices considering that would be a violation of rights. People will do anything for money.
