1.5 KM Tunnel Helps Mexican Drug Kingpin El Chapo Escape High Security Prison

Mexico’s most powerful drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has escaped from a top security prison outside Mexico City through a 1.5-kilometer long and 10 meters deep tunnel that had ventilation, oxygen tanks and stairs.

Guzman was last seen in the shower area of his cell about 9 pm local time on Saturday. Security commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido told reporters that Guzman’s escape was discovered when officers checked his cell and found a 20-by-20 inch hole around 10 meter deep with a ladder, which led to the tunnel. It came to an end at a construction site outside the prison walls.

Altiplano, considered the main and most secure of Mexico’s federal prisons, also houses Zetas drug cartel leader Miguel Angel Trevino, and Edgar Valdes Villarreal of the Beltran Leyva cartel.

Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the US as well as Mexico, and was on the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s most-wanted list. A manhunt has been launched and flights suspended at the local Toluca airport. At least 18 prison officers have been taken to Mexico City for questioning over Guzman escape.

Guzman was first caught by authorities in Guatemala in 1993, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison on drug-trafficking-related charges. It was the second time Guzman had escaped from a top security prison. In 2001, he broke out by hiding in a laundry basket after bribing prison officials. He was finally re-captured in February 2014.

Guzman’s Sinaloa Cartel Empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. The cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last decade, taking at least an estimated 100,000 lives.

The US Justice Department describes Sinaloa Cartel as “one of the world’s most prolific, violent and powerful drug cartels”. “The Sinaloa Cartel moves drugs by land, air, and sea, including cargo aircraft, private aircraft, submarines and other submersible and semi-submersible vessels, container ships, supply vessels, go-fast boats, fishing vessels, buses, rail cars, tractor trailers, trucks, automobiles, and private and commercial interstate and foreign carriers,” the Justice Department said in January after authorities seized more than 1,400 pounds of methamphetamine, almost 3,000 pounds of cocaine, 12.2 tons of marijuana and 5,500 oxycodone pills, along with $14.1 million.
