According to a new Pew Research Center survey, the percentage of American adults identifying as Christians has fallen from 78.4 in 2007 to about 70.6 in 2014. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans who are religiously unaffiliated — describing themselves as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular” — has jumped from 16.1 to 22.8. Share of non-Christian religious faiths, including Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and “other world religions and faiths” has also increased from 4.7% to 5.9% of US adults.

“The US remains home to more Christians than any other country in the world, and a large majority of Americans continue to identify with some branch of the Christian faith, but the percentage of adults who describe themselves as Christians has dropped by almost eight points since 2007,” the survey of a little over 35,000 adults found.

According to The Religious Landscape Study, one of the most important factors in the declining share of Christians and the growth of the “nones” is generational replacement. As the Millennial generation enters adulthood, its members display much lower levels of religious affiliation, including less connection with Christian churches, than older generations.

However, generational replacement is by no means the only reason that religious “nones” are growing and Christians are declining. People in older generations are increasingly disavowing association with organized religion, the survey found.

“The younger generation seems much less involved in organized religion and the older generation is passing on, which is a very important factor,” John Green, a professor of political science at the University of Akron in Ohio and an adviser on the survey, told The Guardian.

So Why Is Atheism More Popular Than Ever?

The involvement of religious groups in politics, particularly regarding issues such as same sex marriage and abortion, is alienating younger adults, who tend to have more liberal and progressive views than older people. The rise of the Internet and social media has also drawn younger adults towards online, general social groups and away from face-to-face organizations and traditional habits, such as churchgoing,” Green noted.

A survey of 4,500 Americans taken between November 12 and December 18, 2013, by Public Religion Research Institute provided further evidence that negative teachings related to gays and lesbians hurt churches’ ability to attract and retain young people and played a significant role in nearly one-third of Millennial leaving organized religion.

Specifically, 17% of Millennial, or adults between 18 and 33, said negativity around LGBT issues in religion was “somewhat important” to their departure, while 14% said it was a “very important” factor. A majority of Americans, 58%, also said that religious groups are “alienating young adults by being too judgmental on gay and lesbian issues“; among Millennial, that percentage jumped to 70.

Pew Research Center predicts by 2050, the number of Muslims would nearly equal the number of Christians. While Christianity would remain the world’s largest religion, with 2.92 billion believers, the population of Muslims would grow rapidly — from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.76 billion in 2050. The population of religiously unaffiliated is forecast to increase to 1.2 billion in 2050. In the US, their population would grow from 16% in 2010 to 26% in 2050.

  1. I don’t think you can call all of it atheism. There are probably a lot who believe in a spiritual afterlife.. just not in an omnipresent, omniscient, all-powerful God… all part of an evolving spirituality.

    • Actually, atheism is the position that there are no deities; that’s it. You can believe in unicorns and still be an atheist; although a genetic anomaly of a horse with a horn isn’t hard to imagine, there’s no technical requirement that what you believe in be theoretically possible (like science fiction), it can be entirely fictitious, as long as you don’t consider it a deity, you’re an atheist.

Anyway, what you define as spirituality may one day be explained by science. When it’s explained in scientific terms, does it stop being spirituality? Do you think when it’s no longer unexplained it loses it’s charm? I find a lot of people tend to think that way deep down.

    • THat is exactly what you call atheism, simply the lack of belief in any god, that`s it, nothing else is involved. one can believe any other story of afterlife, or an non-intelligent force of nature/creation….you can even have religion without gods, it`s called Buddhism. Theist, believes in god/gods,Atheist, exact opposite.

      • Religions without gods isn’t called Buddhism… Science or taoism isn’t buddhism for example. Sry but as an atheist/buddhist/taoist/idiot i like to straighten misleading facts 🙂

  2. I really think what is going on now is some of them are becoming more like me, Just too ashamed to even call myself a Christian anymore because of the attitudes of “I am holier than thou” That seems to be what I feel about someone who quote the bible but don’t follow the teachings of Christ.

  3. `With regard to the apparently plummeting standards in human relationships (Pedophilia, refugees etc.) one is tempted to ask “where the hell is the Christan church when you really need it?

  4. I believe the article is correct. The religious right’s pit bull attitude towards gay marriage and other issues is driving people away from organized religion. Some are becoming atheist, and some are replacing it with some notion of a creator just not the Christian one. This current fixation the christian right has with muslims is only going to turn more and more away. I believe it’s a good thing, no matter if you become atheist or just reject the ‘Christian God Theory’.

Personally, I don’t care what people believe as long as they leave me out of it.

    • I hope one day most people will stand by a variation of your last sentence:

“I don’t care what people believe as long as they leave other people out of it.”

  5. People are waking up to the fact that religion is not about god its man made for the benefit of subdugating others. Eg. The pope who brought in no meat on good friday was a vegetarian and wanted no meat on anyday so where is god in that decision? Nowhere cause he dosent exist and the bible is a book of lies written by liars for the sheep in this world who need to have someone to blame for their own fuckups

  6. And people wonder why the world is falling apart. …

We change religious beliefs and convert to religions based on which is most convenient and self serving. It doesn’t matter what is right anymore. It’s pathetic.

  7. I am not surprised. This is according to the Word of God written in Bible.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses,…But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”

In last days the believers of God shall become fewer and fewer and unbelievers shall become more and more.
