Video: The Book That Turns Into A Tree After Reading It

This sounds like some sort of magic. But it is not magic. It an innovative invention a book publishing company is using to help save the environment and conserve trees.

The history of books starts with the development of writing and various inventions, including  paper and printing. Since then, it has continued through to the modern day book printing industry.

And all the books and paper products we use everyday originate from trees. By cutting down and not replacing the tress used for the manufacturing of books, the environment then loses its diversity of trees.

In the US, data from the Environmental Protection Agency, shows that Americans use 69 million tons of paper and paperboard annually, of which a large percent goes into publishing more than 2 billion books, 350 million magazines and 24 billion newspapers every year. This is in the US alone. If we mean to analyze data country by country, you would be shocked by the figures.

Even though about 65 percent of the paper used in the US ends up being recycled, it is estimated that more than half of the world’s forests may disappear by 2030. According to Greenpeace, every two seconds, an area of forest equivalent to the size of a football pitch is lost due to logging or destructive practices.

For this reason, teaching children to conserve trees and repurpose what they have is critical for the survival of the environment.

It is in the light of this that Argentina’s book publishing company-Pequeño, has come up with a fantastic idea called “Tree Book Tree” project, which is aimed at replacing a lost tree and help sustain the environment.

This is the nature of the project. Pequeño has created a hand-stitched children’s book made from acid-free paper, ecological ink, and jacaranda seeds. Once the child is done reading this book it will then grow into a tree.

The main aim of the book is to teach children where books come from, as well as provide them with a hands-on way to give back to the environment. The book is titled “Mi Papá Estuvo en la Selva,” meaning “My Dad Was in the Jungle”.

The book talks about the nature of the rainforest and promotes respect for all living things. After reading the story, children can use what they have learnt and plant the book in the soil. With a bit of patience and tender loving care, it will eventually grow into a tree.

Everything we read is part of our mental library and what we are as people. So reading is rooted in us and transforms us: make us grow and change. When planted, the book is part of an action plan that is designed to encourage reading and environmental care,” Pequeño wrote on its website.
