Just one day after Trump mocked a reporter with a disability, he denied he had ever done so and even accused the reporter of “using his disability to grandstand.”
He then demanded that the New York Times, which employs the reporter, apologize for a statement it had made which criticized him for ridiculing “the appearance of one of our reporters.”
At a South Carolina rally, he was defending his claims that he had witnessed thousands of Muslims cheering on Sept 11th 2001 as the World Trade Center fell.
Trump claimed to have cited reporter Serge Kovaleski for an article he had written in the days after the attack.
Kovalski wrote that “authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river.” It should be noted that he did not mention the religious affiliation of the party-goers, nor the exact number.
When he was interviewed by CNN, Kovaleski said he did not recall “anyone saying there were thousands, or even hundreds, of people celebrating.”
This statement apparently pissed Trump off, who during the rally said:
“Now, the poor guy — you’ve got to see this guy, ‘Ah, I don’t know what I said! I don’t remember!’ ” Trump said as he jerked his arms in front of his body.
How Trump’s supporters could sit through that and still cheer for him is one of life’s great mysteries.
In another statement, Trump said “Kovaleski must think a lot of himself if he thinks I remember him from decades ago — if I ever met him at all, which I doubt I did,” Trump said. “He should stop using his disability to grandstand and get back to reporting for a paper that is rapidly going down the tubes.”
“I have no idea who this reporter, Serge Kovalski [sic] is, what he looks like or his level of intelligence. I don’t know if he is J.J. Watt or Muhammad Ali in his prime — or somebody of less athletic or physical ability. Despite having one of the all-time great memories I certainly do not remember him.”
Kovalski has, however, interviewed trump on numerous occasions, 12 to be exact, with one interview lasting over two hours. The two were even on first-name basis.
Trump added that he thought Kovaleski’s recollections about his 2001 article “seemed like (again without knowing what he looks like) he was groveling and searching for a way out from what he wrote many years before”…. basically admitting that he had seen the CNN interview of Kovalesk.
“They should focus on the survival of their newspaper and not on dishonest and very bad reporting about me,” he said. “The New York Times has become more and more irrelevant and rapidly becoming a total joke — sad!”
