The populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish have declined by 52% since 1970.
Are you aware that in the last two human generations alone, over 50% of the planet’s wildlife has been killed off?

According to the Living Planet 2014 Report, the populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish have declined by 52% since 1970. The figure is based on the Living Planet Index (LPI), which measures more than 10,000 representative populations of the species listed.

WWF relays:

“We are using nature’s gifts as if we had more than just one Earth at our disposal. By taking more from our ecosystems and natural processes than can be replenished, we are jeopardizing our very future. Nature conservation and sustainable development go hand-in-hand. They are not only about preserving biodiversity and wild places, but just as much about safeguarding the future of humanity – our well-being, economy, food security and social stability – indeed, our very survival.

In a world where so many people live in poverty, it may appear as though protecting nature is a luxury. But it is quite the opposite. For many of the world’s poorest people, it is a lifeline. Importantly though, we are all in this together. We all need nutritious food, fresh water and clean air – wherever in the world we live.

Things look so worrying that it may seem difficult to feel positive about the future. Difficult, certainly, but not impossible – because it is in ourselves, who have caused the problem, that we can find the solution. Now we must work to ensure that the upcoming generation can seize the opportunity that we have so far failed to grasp, to close this destructive chapter in our history, and build a future where people can live and prosper in harmony with nature.”

Humans are contributing to the sixth mass extinction in no uncertain terms. Sadly, the extent of damage homo sapiens are causing is rarely taken into consideration by the average individual.

Now is the time to wake up and adopt more sustainable, conscious habits to ensure a healthy environment exists for future generations. We are all connected – and collectively, we have the potential to create the solutions that will safeguard the future of this, our one and only planet.

  1. No being in this planet has to die because of the ignorance and irresponsibility of the elite, governments, corporations and war cabals… people have to join and end them now… this is a war between those who don’t see nature and those who see nature

    • I’m afraid I am pessimistic about the prospects for halting the losses. There is just far too much greed in the world. On top of that there is a widespread failure to recognize that non-human life forms are not less than us but merely different, and that all life-forms are precious because they are irreplaceable. I believe that losses will continue, and that many species will vanish altogether. This will be a tragedy of unspeakable proportions. Future generations (if any) will know where to lay the blame.

      • I agree with your comment so much! I love animals, for so many reasons. When an animal attacks, 99% of the time it’s instinct. (1% are the animals just trying to please their human and attacking on command.) If we lived as animals do – the world would be a vastly different place. Eg; animals live with the earth & everything mother nature has for us; carnivorous predators only ever kill what they need for survival – they don’t hunt for fun, nor do they kill just because they’re capable.
How can humans claim to be highly evolved when we humans are single-handedly destroying our earth; wiping out entire species, poisoning everything, dropping bombs & slaughtering the innocent for “peace”, clearing forests, playing God, torturing both animals and humans alike. We’ve been ruthlessly raping the planet, and for what? So a handful of people can hoard some stupid paper while the rest of us are left with the ruins of their destruction. How is killing for pleasure evolved? What about greed, or cruelty? How can we be the most intelligent, “evolved” beings on our earth, if something as insignificant as someone’s beliefs or the colour of their skin, their gender or even their sexual orientation, can literally start riots and be blamed for wars. There are so many different species of apes and of monkeys – they don’t go out of way to kill eachother over essentially meaningless differences. They don’t wage wars nor torture eachother, they don’t let their differences dictate who’s superior – hell, aside from territories – I think they couldn’t care less. Yes, animals understand and respect the territories of other animals, and they definitely understand that being different isn’t an excuse for hatred and violence. Animals are far more intelligent than we; we may have evolved, some for the best. However, only a fool can cause so much global death and destruction with no remorse.
We all came to be on the earth the same way & ultimately we will all die, thus becoming part of the earth.

  2. We’re (both human and non-human life forms) already royally fucked. One word….

    Fukushima.

    Still happening today.

  3. What is the puzzle is that,in spite of all the scientific facts supporting the loss of wildlife and damage to the environment,so many people sit on their backsides and make no attempt what so ever,to correct the situation.STOP SUPPORTING THE MEAT INDUSTRIES,HELP CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT,SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL AND GROUPS FIGHTING FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS——BUT FOR ALL OF OUR SAKES—DO SOMETHING !!!!!!

  4. The puzzle is that,in spite of all the scientific facts supporting loss of wildlife and damage to the environment,so many people still sit on their backsides and do nothing about it.—-STOP SUPPORTING THE MEAT INDUSTRIES,HELP CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT BY ONLY USING PRODUCTS THAT ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY,SUPPORT GROUPS THAT ARE TRYING TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OR GROUPS THAT ARE FIGHTING FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS,BUT,FOR ALL OUR OF US,DO SOMETHING !!!!
