Texas 2015: A student is suspected of a psychological disorder. It could range from a very mild depressive state (commonly known as melancholy), to the extreme scale of schizophrenia or autism. Anything under the psychological spectrum, with any questions raised by the teacher, will give the school officials authority to conduct a forced screening, and report it. Teachers and staff will have the power to diagnose mental health issues.
“ …the requirement that the parent or guardian, before the expiration of the 30-day period, to avoid suspension of the student under this section, take the student to the nearest local mental health authority or a physician specializing in psychiatry to receive a mental health screening and a certificate of medical examination for mental illness, as described by Section 533.03522(c), Health and Safety Code, that contains the examining physician’s opinion that the student is not a danger to self or others.”
If suspended, the child can still receive education from an alternative school. They will also receive a permanent record with mental health authorities, and if deemed with the police department, the “complaint” will be filed under the law requiring school administrators to act…
Nightmarish, but true if Jason Villalba (R-Dallas), has his way with another of his Orwellian proposals, H.B. 985. [1] Let’s hope the unruly children subjected to this aren’t going through puberty.

This is too extreme. It should only be used as a tool to alert parents/ guardians that a child may need some type of help. Forcing parents to take action is not right. Some parents would prefer to use dietary changes, natural supplements, and other types of therapies to treat “mental illness”, either while seeking a mental health professional / or instead of forcing their children to take prescriptions that are not 100% safe, especially for children.
A teacher is not qualified to diagnose psychological disorders.
There is a reason why you need a psychologist to properly diagnose a disorder.
Energetic kids get branded ADHD while kids with ADHD go undiagnosed until adulthood.
Kids with serious medical disorders (that are already being treated by a doctor) are thought to be psychological disorders by some teachers.
Having an untrained adult diagnose disorders in kids can do permanent psychological harm to a kid.
Think of it as surgery by someone who didn’t study biology past what they teach in high school.
This is the same guy who wanted to make it illegal to film police. He needs to be removed from office.
If this precedent is set, bad teachers will be screened, then all teachers at regular intervals. Another thing, Microsoft should make an alternative school for the rescued autistic kids, they want to employ later. Win-win.
I am not qualified as a college educated parent to diagnose your child with a mental illness let alone punish you or your child for not follow up on my “helpful” suggestions. What makes them think that a mere “teacher” is qualified to diagnose your child? If a child is acting in a way that is a danger to himself or others, the parents should be notified and they should make the decision on what type of treatment the child needs. I agree that dangerous students or majorly disruptive students need an alternative educational setting, but it’s not up to the teacher or the school to mandate psychiatric help. Yet one more reason for parents to seriously consider homeschooling.
I have been advocating against these school crooks and social service crooks for over 20 years. They make up the reports with mostly false information. This disgust me to no end. Teachers and Social Services are government employees, and the people that diagnosis these children for them are government contractors. This is just a way to steal children and data track, with made up crap about children and parents. Money Big Money is attached to these kids and their parents.
