Seeds Of Suicide: How 291,000 Indian Farmers Lost Their Lives Thanks To Monsanto

Over the last 20 years, 291,000 farmers in India, committed suicide as a direct result of Monsanto’s GMO seeds. Most of the farmers committed suicide by drinking the very same insecticide that Monsanto supplied them. But how did Monsanto wreck the lives of independent and traditional farmers?

Monsanto lead hundreds of thousands of farmers to suicide by giving them GMO seeds not bred for rain-fed agriculture, resulting in non-viable failed crops, getting them into debt, and eventually ruining their lives to such an extent that they killed themselves.

Monsanto sold seeds that either didn’t grow, or lead to the development of unstoppable super weeds and super bugs. GM crops attract new pests, which require more chemical treatment (great for Monsanto, not so great for Indian farmers). Therefore, Monsanto essentially created a generational slave economy, based on its toxic chemical and seed monopolies.

95% of India’s cotton seed is today controlled by Monsanto. Monsanto’s concentrated control over the seed sector across the world is what connects farmers’ suicides in India to Monsanto vs Percy Schmeiser in Canada, to Monsanto vs Bowman in the US, and to farmers in Brazil suing Monsanto for $2.2 billion for unfair collection of royalty.
