Luxury carmaker Lexus has created a fully-functional “Back To The Future” Marty McFly Hoverbaord called SLIDE which uses superconductors cooled by liquid nitrogen and permanent magnets to make the board levitate through magnetic repulsion giving the skateboard “frictionless movement” allowing it to hover off the ground. Lexus is currently testing the Hoverboard in Spain; the functional levitation device will be used as part of Lexus’ “Amazing in Motion” ad campaign this summer.
“It’s very confidential information, but we have been studying the flying car in our most advanced R&D area. Flying car means the car is just a little bit away from the road, so it doesn’t have any friction or resistance from the road,” Hiroyoshi Yoshiki, a managing officer in Toyota’s Technical Administration Group, had said at the Bloomberg Next Big Thing Summit in Sausalito, California in June 2014.
The technology doesn’t seem to require a special surface to operate. Lexus’ Hoverboard appears to work over pavement as well, and not just the special metal tracks. Its design features materials found in Lexus cars from the high tech to the natural bamboo.
The prototype is not yet for sale, but Lexus says it will be releasing more information in the future —on October 21, 2015, the day Doc, Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer went back to the future in the movie.

Haha, we could have hover cars, we would have to build a large metal grid beneath the roads, and use natural metal deposits for off-road but that is extremely iffy

As long as it requires liquid nitrogen to ‘levitate’ I do not think we’ll be seeing it in production soon, but it is good news, yes!! Last time we heard about one of these wasn’t it a hoax?? 15-20 years or so…
wouldn’t the reduction of friction between the car and the group due to the levitation actually allow the car to produce less carbon emissions than if it were to roll along the ground?
