NASA’s Kepler Telescope Discovers Earth 2.0

NASA’s Kepler mission has discovered Kepler-452b, the first near-Earth-size planet in the “habitable zone” orbiting around a star 1,400 light years from Earth. The confirmation of Kepler-452b, which is located in the constellation Cygnus, brings the total number of confirmed planets to 1,030.

We can think of Kepler-452b as an older, bigger cousin to Earth, providing an opportunity to understand and reflect upon Earth’s evolving environment. It’s awe-inspiring to consider that this planet has spent 6 billion years in the habitable zone of its star; longer than Earth. That’s substantial opportunity for life to arise, should all the necessary ingredients and conditions for life exist on this planet,” said Jon Jenkins, Kepler data analysis lead at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.

NASA researchers, who have dubbed Kepler-452b as Earth 2.0, don’t know its exact mass or what it’s made out of, but they said that previous research has shown that planets the size of Kepler-452b are usually rocky.

“On the 20th anniversary year of the discovery that proved other suns host planets, the Kepler exoplanet explorer has discovered a planet and star which most closely resemble the Earth and our Sun. This exciting result brings us one step closer to finding an Earth 2.0,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.

Kepler-452b orbits at a very similar distance from its star, though its radius is 60% larger. The most Earth-like planet yet, however, orbits a parent star which belongs to the same class as the Sun: it is just 4% more massive and 10% brighter. Kepler-452b takes 385 days to complete a full circuit of this star, so its orbital period is 5% longer than Earth’s. While similar in size and brightness to the Sun, Kepler-452b’s host star is 1.5 billion years older than ours. Scientists working on the mission therefore believe it could point to a possible future for the Earth.

“This is really the first step, and humankind’s first step, to answering that question ‘Are we alone in the Universe?’. You and I won’t be traveling to these planets, but our children’s children’s children may,” John Jenkins, of the SETI Institute, said at a NASA press conference.

The discovery of Kepler-452b is substantial but it’s not the first of its kind. In 2014, astronomers at the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Researcher Center announced the first Earth-sized exoplanet, Kepler-186f, found orbiting in a star’s habitable zone. The main difference between Kepler-186f and Kepler-452b is their host stars – Kepler-186 is a red dwarf whereas Kepler-452 is much more closely related to the Sun.

  1. What if its habitable with intelligence life we might make the same mistakes again with what the Europeans did with the natives of Australia and America, or they are probably smarter than us and we could initiate the first interplanetary war with that planet because of our nature to feel superior than others. How can we negotiate a friendly resolution between worlds if we can’t stop our own wars?

    • Yes precisely. I was thinking the same. And even if the planet wasn’t inhabited what are to do? After we’ve messed up our own planet we are thinking about moving to another to mess up? This truly installs how fucked up of a species we are.. Our home is going bad let’s move to the next one… Shitty logic

  2. Do you believe that ultra-richs ain’t thinking about future . do you believe they don’t think about theyr childs, and grand childs ? Do you believe they are so money obsessed they are ready to just fuck everything and everybody including themselves within the few next decades ? And if they are lucids, why do they sell us gazes sprays, oil engines, highly polluting fridges, and so on ? If they have a plan, what is it ?
My idea is that they are mad but not psychotic… They perfectly knows our society has already kills too many vitals species for this eco system to not to collapse soon and they actually count on it as a part of theyr plan. The main problem they are facing is surpopulation. In an extrem, you may have the latest machine gun in yoiur hand, if you are surrounded by 3 000 peoples with empty hands, you may kill few hundreds, but your gun is going to get to hot to be fired, and you wil have to try to run away from who is left alive, and it s about theyr problem with surpopulation, they are strong but still could get outnumberedvery kickly. I have been in poors areas of this world, like India’s majors slums, and i can tell you thatif you asked any young woman how many childs she s wishing to haven she will answer 10 ! Why 10 children when they can’t even afford a proper life for themselves ? simply because sending each of them at work from the age of 5 will bring 50 cents a day per piece at home, just like her parents did, almost like we did in europe before the retirements pensions were established and farmers were rising up to 15 kids so 7 to 10 were surviving. That’s also why, despite UNO report in 90 said that 4% of the 222 biggest fortunes would be enough to eradicate poverty all over the world, they refuses to help and keep selling weapons to opposites camps so to generates as many deaths as possible, because feeding the poors would quadruplate the over population problem in a single genration. Kill them before they grows, that s theyr policy of de-population.
Sothey pushes us to more and more consumption of polluting products, and for the ones who cares about ecology, theyhave layedfew good jokes, like the “green” vegetal gas that needs 1.2 liter of gas oil to produces 1 liter of green gas, or photo voltaic panels that cost more in energy and pollution than it generates energy, and so on . the only green solutions they agree to spread are worth than the actuals ones, so far they goes. Hence, it will accelerates the crash of our eco system and so will have two “positives” effects : 1 is to radically reduces the number of humans on Earth and 2 it will avoidthat all those rabbits finishes to consumes non renewables ressources whic would’nt last long otherwise.
Then, as you can read below, the sea level will rises and the lost of inhabitables lands is a mere detail besides another consequence : it will kills most of us. Why ? because 40 % of the world volcanic parkis at sea level. When the oceans will rises of less than a single meter, wich is very very close to happens, within 2 or 3 decades at most, the gazes chemneys of all those volcanos will be flooded, hence generating a pression that will brings those volcanos to all happily erupts at the same time, wich means huges loads of ashes in the sky generating a looooonnng daaarrrrkk night most of us won’t survive, while they ll be comfortably living in undergrounds cities, where they do not plan to stay long, either. According to the exponential rate of scientific discoverys (we made more discoverys from 90 to 2000 than we did previously in all humanity history, and wemade even more the following decade, and so on), they expect they ll be able to migrate on some Earth-like planets before 40 years, wich means 10 to 20 after the eco system breaks down. See documentation below. i can see this shit fore coming since two decades, now, and it has only precises itself since….

The world is already committed to a six meter sea level rise
Pete Dolack / Systemic Disorder 24th July 2015
The climate change discourse rarely looks beyond 2100, writes Pete Dolack. Maybe that’s because even at current levels of CO2, we are committed to thousands of years of warming and polar ice melt that will raise sea levels by at least six meters. However the implacable imperatives of capitalism mean there’s little prospect of change for a long time to come.
