North Dakota First State To Let Police Arm Drones

Welcome to the Police State: North Dakota becomes the first State in the U.S. to allow law enforcement to use weaponized drones. While North Dakota House Bill 1328 specifically prohibits the use of ‘lethal’ weapons on unmanned aerial vehicles in North Dakota, it does not prohibit the use of any ‘non-lethal’ weapons by law enforcement, which would include tear gas, pepper spray, tasers, sound cannons, rubber bullets and other ‘non-lethal’ means.

The original bill itself, introduced by Rep. Rick Becker, was initially meant to limit drone surveillance without warrants and completely prohibit the use of drone weapons by law enforcement. Instead, an amendment was made to the original draft only specifically prohibiting the use of ‘lethal’ weapons on drones, which has opened the door to non-lethal drone weaponization.

The Bill’s sponsor, Rep. Rick Becker, comments on his feelings about the amendment allowing non-lethal weapons in The Daily Beast,

“This is one I’m not in full agreement with. I wish it was any weapon,” he said at a hearing in March. “In my opinion there should be a nice, red line: Drones should not be weaponized. Period.”

It will be interesting to see how many other States decide to jump on North Dakota’s bandwagon.
