Scientists Develop $1 Super Condom That Can Kill HIV Virus, Boost Pleasure

Scientists at Texas A&M University have developed a non-latex condom – made of an elastic polymer called hydrogel and a plant-based antioxidant called quercetin – capable of killing HIV virus even if it breaks during intercourse. Hydrogel is a water-based gel used to heal cuts and scientists believe the antioxidant embedded hydrogel will block the virus and prevent it from replicating. Scientists also claim quercetin content in the condom is capable of enhancing sexual stimulation and pleasure; and since quercetin promotes smooth muscle relaxation and arterial blood flow, it’ll help maintain erections.

Dr. Mahua Choudhury, lead researcher and assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center’s Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, said:

“Some people are allergic to latex, and others are just not comfortable with it. Therefore, we wanted to create a novel material. We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible. Super condom could help fight against HIV infection and may as well prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases and if we succeed, it will revolutionize the HIV prevention initiative. If you can make it really affordable, and really appealing, it could be a life-saving thing.”

The HIV fighting condoms are currently in the prototype stage. Choudhury estimates they will be on the market in a year, and will be priced at around one dollar.

Last year, Australian bio-tech firm Starpharma developed condoms lubricated with VivaGel, which contains 0.5% astodrimer sodium – a non-antibiotic, antimicrobial drug designed specifically as a compound against HIV. Tests confirmed the VivaGel condom was effective in deactivating 99.9% of HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus cases. In July 2014, Vivagel condom received regulatory approval by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). It is currently undergoing trials in the US for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance in the normal vaginal microflora.

Global statistics - people living with HIV

Since 2000, 38.1 million people have become infected with HIV and 25.3 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses. In 2014, an estimated 36.9 million people were living with HIV (including 2.6 million children) – a global HIV prevalence of 0.8%. In the same year, while 1.2 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses, there were roughly 2 million new HIV infections.

    • Karen, don’t be a hater when you have no idea what they feel like. Also, I’m pretty sure most people would want to use these condoms if they really do what they promise. Boy, being a woman in America must be tough since all you American women do is complain about everything without giving things a chance to work. It’s women like you that give women a very bad name. Thank god I have no interest being with any American women.

      • Luis, I couldn’t see where Karen was complaining about the new product. I read her post as more of a complaint against people who are HIV positive who can’t be bothered to use a condom at all.

And a side note. In many African cultures there is the wrongheaded superstition that having (unprotected) sex with a virgin will cure a man of HIV. Can you imagine for a moment what that does to women in a culture? What it does for the spread of this pernicious disease? Just evil.

Might I also add that regarding your lack of interest in American women. If I may speak for many of my American sisters, the feeling is quite mutual. Thanks for relieving us of that pressure.
