Deliberate political bias in publishing is possibly the worst kept secret in journalism; however, rarely does a reporter step forward to expose the industry like this. Yesterday, James Varney, a Pulitzer Prize award winning author representing The American Media Institute, released a report exposing how liberal media elites have spent millions financing Democratic candidates in federal elections through union fees collected directly from authors covering stories about these same candidates.
The company, known as the Communications Workers of America, represents a union of workers and serves as a talent provider of sorts, connecting authors/publishers/writers to the telecommunications/print industry – though it must be noted that writers only make up a small percentage of the overall union. The group is well known for providing talent to respected media leaders including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Washington Post – among several others. According to the company website, the union “represents 700,000 workers in private and public sector….members work in telecommunications and information technology, the airline industry, news media, broadcast and cable television, education, health care and public service, law enforcement, manufacturing and other fields.” The report goes on to specify that there are about 34,000 members currently working in the Newspaper Guild, and another 10,000 members working in broadcasting systems – all belonging to this union.
Mr. Varney goes on to explain how “since 2008, the union, which gives 97 percent of its money to Democrats, has contributed more than $8.7 million to federal candidates, according to OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan aggregator of political spending. While the union has logged $13,500 in contributions to Sanders so far in the current campaign, it is hedging its bets, giving his primary opponent Clinton $15,000.” When we extend the timeline to 1990, the union has given a total of “$43.8 million to Democratic politicians.” The author then goes on to point out how “that figure dwarfs the $29.5 million spent by Koch Industries on conservative and libertarian candidates and issues.“
I know what you are thinking, because I thought it too…well, if this is true, then how much money does Fox News and Rupert Murdoch contribute to the Republican Party? Figuring the amount would far surpass the amount exposed in the report above, I looked it up before even thinking about taking on this article. You might be fascinated to learn, as was I, that the parent company of Fox News 21 Century, known as News Corporation, has actually donated more money to the Clintons and Democrats than they have Republicans – Seriously. Even the same source from above, OpenSecrets, confirms this: https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?id=D000000227
In an attempt to be fair to any authors who may be indirectly hurt as a result of his report, Mr. Varney predicates his article, saying that “the journalists themselves are not necessarily aware of this conflict of interest and their participation in it is rarely disclosed by their news organizations.” However, with all the evidence considered, ‘not necessarily being aware’ is a stretch. After all, the union’s homepage features the words “CWA for Bernie” and the union has all but copied and pasted his platform on various pages across their site. In previous years, the union has been open in their support of Democratic leaders and, as the article points out, have publicly claimed to have directly influenced liberal political policy, such as with Harry Reid’s “nuclear option” in 2013. To ‘not necessarily be aware’ of what a union you belong to, and pay money to stands for is to be completely oblivious to the world around you – something I highly doubt of respected political publishers.
“This is a longstanding problem and something of a scandal, you often have various reporters who are members of various guilds and they would take a position and the readers are not informed of it. It’s a relationship that’s been going on for years, and no one has called them on it.” – Steve Allen, editor of Labor Watch –
“It’s a real problem for those who cover politics. I felt it only confirmed the impression the public has about the media, that they were unbelievably liberal. I’m pretty liberal myself…but I did not like the idea of a union that represented reporters saying we are endorsing a particular candidate. That just does not work for me with the idea of a reporter keeping a distance and at least trying to live up to the idea we should be impartial. ” – Fred Brown, co-chair of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Ethics Committee –

Citing a the amount of money 700,000 people have contributed to political agendas as opposed to the contributions of two individuals doesn’t appear to be a fair comparison.
When you check the website cited in this article you can see that the koch brothers have spent 7 million just last year.
