A very prominent political strategist for the 2016 Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, said on a live television broadcast that the United States should murder WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by shooting him.
Bob Beckel made the unguided and despicable comments in December 2010, while on Eric Bolling’s show Cashin’ In on the Fox Business Network.
Beckel’s comments arrived after Assange released the United States diplomatic cables given to him by Bradley Manning (now Chelsea Manning). At the time, Hillary Clinton was the Foreign Minister for the United States. Assange became a primary target for many surrogates of the Obama administration – and the Democratic Party as a whole. The administration was concerned, worried that WikiLeaks was making it unpopular, revealing damning secrets for the American public and the world to see.
But despite the threats and harassment from the then United States government, it didn’t deter Assange and his team from showing the American public what they should understand about their government. United States Department of State cables were again released, including documents that gave insight into the United States arming of rebels in Yemen to oust the country’s government. Also, text from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and Trade in Services Agreement (TSA) was revealed.
Apart from these damning diplomatic leaks, WikiLeaks showed remarkable courage and resilience during the 2016 battle for the White House.
Beginning from the start of the primaries – to select nominees to lead their respective political parties in the presidential election – WikiLeaks focused its attention on the Democratic Party.
WikiLeaks published more than 50,000 emails from Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, and more than 27,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which confirmed the DNC worked against Bernie Sanders, who contested Clinton for the party’s nomination.
When these emails were published, hell broke loose in the Democratic Party. The party became disarrayed. Some senior officials of the DNC were forced to resign. When Clinton was nominated, many Sanders’ supporters openly refused to vote for her because she cheated to become the nominee.
When the presidential contest became officially between Donald Trump and Clinton, WikiLeaks continued to leak Clinton campaign secrets.
By the help of WikiLeaks, American voters received the opportunity to understand Clinton’s actions when she was the head of the State Department. The American public also discovered how Wall Street and Silicon Valley elites were pumping huge sums of money into the Clinton campaign, thus helping her secure the country’s presidency.
Although critics have lashed out at WikiLeaks for targeting Clinton while leaving Trump alone, the organization maintained it only had information on Clinton, and that it wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to publish documents on Trump if they had them.
In the end, Trump won the race. During post-election analysis, political commentators admitted WikiLeaks played a key role in the election outcome. Many observers have noted how WikiLeaks sent Clinton into a forced early retirement from politics.
But for WikiLeaks, it did nothing wrong. It possessed information that the American public had the right to know about. By publishing such information is by no means deliberately targeting Clinton, nor is it preventing her from becoming the president of the United States. The American public had the information they deserved, and chose the presidential candidate they thought more suitable.
As we begin 2017, WikiLeaks has announced that it wouldn’t sleep. In fact, many Clinton supporters still believe that WikiLeaks is a surrogate of Trump, and since Trump’s become president, these people believe WikiLeaks has accomplished its mission.
But WikiLeaks has refuted this opinion. The organization has said it is an independent media outlet and would never be biased. WikiLeaks has promised that 2017 will be an even bigger year for leaks.
“If you thought 2016 was a big WikiLeaks year, 2017 will blow you away,” WikiLeaks tweeted. Although WikiLeaks didn’t give specific dates for publishing the information it has, many hope to see something before the end of the first quarter.
