Anonymous Shuts Down Denver Police Website for Killing an Unarmed Man

A hacktivist branch of Anonymous has attacked the website of the Denver police for killing an unarmed innocent man in the city.

On April 12, 2016, police officers from the Denver Police Department (DPD) shot Dion Avila Damon in his car, killing him in the process. The officers shot Damon seven times through the front windshield of the car.

The horrible shooting took place near the Denver Art Museum, at the intersection of 14th & Bannock. According to the account of the story, Damon had just dropped off his wife and child, when a police SWAT team from the DPD pulled up from behind, and tried to serve a warrant for his arrest.

It is unclear what happened in the process, but the SWAT team ended up shooting him through the front windshield of his car. You can see above, the picture showing the bullet holes on the front windshield of the car. Damon’s wife and child were standing nearby, and were direct witnesses of the disturbing incident. Damon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Damon’s death sparked an outrage in the city. The DPD later addressed the press at a conference that Damon was a suspect in a robbery case. The police admitted that no gun, or any dangerous weapon for that matter, was retrieved from Damon’s car after they shot him.

Damon’s wife also told FOX31 Denver in an interview that her husband dropped her off to pay a traffic fine at the local courthouse. She said she pleaded with the police officers that her husband was unarmed when they arrived to arrest him. But the officers will have none of her plea, adding that they fired their guns as soon as exiting their patrol cars.

In light of these revelations, members of the New World Hackers (NWH), one of Anonymous’ divisions, launched Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against the website of the city police. The attack also included the official government portal of the city. NWH accused the police of acting very reckless, killing an innocent man.

Softpedia reports that NWH also attacked the Bank of Denver. The group said both attacks were in retaliation to the unlawful killing of Mr Damon.

Hack Read describes the DDoS attacks by NWH as very powerful. One of the attackers was quoted as saying “We see how Denver police don’t care so if they don’t care about killing and innocent; we don’t care about continuous attacks on Denver.”

New World Hackers also said they will soon release a damning database that will expose the level of corruption and recklessness of the PDP. NWH has also given the PDP a deadline to bring the officers who shot Damon to book, or continue being under DDoS attacks.

Because of the threats and attacks of NWH, an official of the DPD has said all the officers involved in the shooting have been placed under investigations. However, there was no independent confirmation to this claim by the police official.

This is not the first time Anonymous has gone after police officers in the United States. In February this year, Anonymous leaked the personal details of 52 officers and employees of the Cincinnati Police Department after the controversial killing of Paul Gaston by the city police. That attack was carried out by members of Anonymous known as Anon Verdict.
