Since it was announced that Freddie Grey had suffered an untimely death, whilst in police custody, the past two weeks have been chaotic and violent in Baltimore. Photos of police clashing with protesters, have occupied front pages of newspapers and websites across the world, making people angry, agitated and tired.
So, when a photo of a young African-American boy offering a bottle of water to an officer donning riot gear, was posted by Bishop M. Comartie, Senior Pastor at Prophetic Deliverance Ministries in Baltimore, it quickly got the attention it deserved. The photo, shared by over 70,000 people on Facebook, was taken as Cromartie and others helped clean Baltimore’s streets after rioters and looters quarreled with police and left the area substantially damaged.
Cromartie told Bustle, that he viewed the photo as “a way to show that Baltimore is not as bad and that the people who riot are just a handful, that clearly you have, statewide, people who actually care”.
“He actually was the only one handing out water — that stood out by himself — and what was so intriguing was he was doing it on his own. It showed that he had a mind of his own that, despite everything that was going on, that he still wanted to make sure the police were okay and he may be realizing that someday he’s going to need the police. The police officer did not take the water and I didn’t expect him to. I would not take it considering what’s going on and how people are feeling,” he said.
