Canada’s PM-Designate to Obama: I’m Withdrawing Canadian Forces from Iraq and Syria & Legalizing Pot

11

Canada has a new government following the country’sfederal election on Monday. The Liberal Party won in a landslide and dethroned Conservatives, who held the majority in the Parliament for nine years. Canada’s current prime minister, Stephen Harper, was also ousted by Liberal Party candidate, Justin Trudeau amid the Parliamentary takeover.

The Liberal Party has vowed to end the prohibition of cannabis, but also ran on a much more dovish foreign policy platform. It seems that Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau was serious about his vow to remove Canada from foreign entanglements. Just hours after his announced victory, he received a phone call from President Barack Obama.

Trudeau confirmed in a press conference that during the call, he told Obama he would stick to “the commitments I have made around ending the combat mission.” One of those commitments is to withdraw Canada’s CF-18 fighter jets from the conflict in Iraq and Syria, effectively ending Canada’s fight against ISIS.

Questioned on whether the U.S. was worried about Canada’s support for the fight against ISIS in Afghanistan, State Department spokesperson John Kirby told reporters“These are all decisions the Canadian people have to make and Canadian legislators have to make…and their Prime Minister [has to make],”

The Liberal Party’s sweep is, at least partially, seen as a rebuke of the Conservatives’ seemingly habitual support of U.S. military adventurism overseas.

  1. The Conservatives have only had majority status for the last 4 years, and were a minority government prior to that. But most of the damage they have arguably done has been in the past 4 years.

  2. What that! Canada is just becoming to this shittiness. Even if I did have anything to say they wouldn’t even care. They already have their minds made up regardless.

  3. That is awesome! Trudeau is already making positive changes! Also be a major supporter for the LGBTQ Community is an added bonus! He already makes Harper look like shit…… Harper should’ve withdrawn our forces from the fight with ISIS when the shooting of Parliament Hill and the death of Cpl. Cirillo occurred……. Thank God Justin has brains…….

  4. I am a Canadian living in the USA . Way to go to Justin Trudeau our new Prime Minister. It’s about time someone smart got in office.

  5. Great News! Man it feels nice to know the Liberals are making the most humane choices of behalf of Canadians. We are the world’s best Peacekeepers and should always be that way. I take pride in that myself. And as for the legalization issue, I always agree with freedom of choice. I’d rather see Canada earn revenue from marijuana, instead of spending money to fight a war that should not be there either. 2 wars over, Peace back to first priority. Love it.

  6. The last person not to follow the U.S. into conflict blindly was Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretian. He didnt believe the evidence against Iraq having W.M.D.’s was accurate and didnt support the invasion..and we all know how that ended up.
