Chinese Mother Saves Son Right Before Falling To Death In A Broken Escalator

A horrifying video of a Chinese woman falling to her death through a hole in an escalator has recently surfaced the web, dropping jaws of millions around the world and showing off even more of China’s construction faults.

As many of us know now, China isn’t one to construct their buildings and machinery to perfection. Many of the things built in China is rushed and/or cheaply made, this video is great example showing another one of China’s man made faults.

Security camera footage, taken at the AZG Mall in central China last sunday, shows a 31 year old woman, Xiang Liujuan, and her son riding up an escalator. The video begins as if nothing bad was ever going to happen, two women working at the Mall are waiting at the top of the escalator, ready to greet the two who are about to come off. It isn’t until Liujuan picks up her son ready to take him off of the escalator, when a metal panel collapses right beneath her feet and takes the her with it. Fortunately, the Mother quickly responds, not only attempting to grab on to the ledge to hold her self up, but also pushes her son up and passes him to the two Mall employees, taking him to safety.

Sadly, the mother could not keep herself up, nor could the employees trying to pull her up succeed, the woman is then seen disappearing into the gap only seconds later.

Officials in Jingzhou, a city with a population of over 5 million in Hubei province, decided to blame the incident on human error at a news conference last night.

Chen Guanxin, the local official in charge of work safety, stated that employees at the mall found the panel to be loose just 5 minutes before the tragedy, however, there was no call to stop the escalator for any kind of inspection or repair. If you watch the full video (which is located at the bottom of this article) you will notice that it is only seconds before the incident when the loose panel was found.

Later on that day, a 4 hour rescue operation was put together in order to rescue the woman, however, when firefighters finally breeched into the escalator Xiang Liujuan was declared dead, finding her body mangled at the bottom.

Liujuan’s family didn’t go unheard either, furious of the situation, the family sent a call online for a thorough and more sincere investigation.

Twitter user, @kkcake, who identified herself as Liujuan’s sister in-law stated, “An ordinary Sunday shopping trip ended up in such a sudden tragedy, almost ruining an entire family,” “The shopping mall is still open and the killer escalators are still running,” she added. “Shoppers have no idea about the tragedy upstairs and no one knows if such disasters will strike again.”
