A video of a Muslim youth, Riyaz, beaten mercilessly for two hours by the Bajrang Dal goons, for allegedly slaughtering a cow, has mounted communal tension in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district. Riyaz, however, claimed he was only sitting at the place where the cow was allegedly being slaughtered. The police officers arrested Riyaz, who was bleeding profusely, while taking no actions against the members of Bajrang Dal, who paraded Riyaz throughout the city hurling abuses on the Muslim community at large. Local civil groups have blamed the ruling Samajwadi Party and the BJP of once again creating communal tension in Muzaffarnagar. The 2013 communal riots killed more than 50, injured hundreds and left 50,000 displaced.
