A court in the U.S. state of New York, has awarded undisclosed damages to an African-American woman after she was unlawfully arrested and detained for eight days.
Kamilah Brock, told the court she was forced to spend eight days in a mental health facility and was given a $13,000 bill because the officers who arrested her didn’t believe the BMW she was driving was hers. Believing that her rights had been woefully violated by the officers, Brock decided to then go on and sue the police department.
According to the Metro News, Brock, 32, was originally pulled over by New York Police Department (NYPD) officers for not holding onto the steering wheel while driving.
Brock told the officers that she had been dancing to music and didn’t think it was a problem because the traffic lights were on red. The officers ignored her explanation and arrested her.
The officers held her without charge for several hours and later took her car to a compound. When all seemed to be over, she informed the officers that she owned the BMW car she was driving, that she worked as a banker and that Barack Obama follows her Twitter; however, after hearing this additional information, the officers decided not to release her.
The officers did not believe her despite the fact all three points were true. The officers said she was suffering from mental illness and that she could not own that car.
She was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she was stripped naked, forced to take lithium, and was injected with powerful sedatives. Her lawyer, Michael Lamonsoff, told the court she was discriminated against because she is black. He also alleged that over the eight days Brock spent in the hospital, officers repeatedly tried to get her to deny that she owned the BMW.
“I just felt like from the moment I said I owned a BMW, I was looked at as a liar. They put me in handcuffs and said they just need to put me in handcuffs to take me to my car. And I said OK, whatever it’s gonna take to get to my car. Then EMS approached me. And they said we’re gonna take you to your car. And I’m like, in an ambulance? I’m going to my car in an ambulance? I’m going to my car in an ambulance? I was just so confused,” Brock said when explaining her ordeal.
In response to Brock claims, the police department weakly argued that Brock was acting irrationally, speaking incoherently and inconsistently. They also said she ran into the middle of traffic on Eighth Ave’ when she was pulled over, contradicting their earlier claim that she was not holding onto the steering wheel.
Many activists in the city have welcomed the ruling, adding that such actions need to be taken in order to stop police officers from oppressing innocent citizens.

Unfortunately we don’t have suit cams with mic’s to check the veracity of the cops’ story. They have lied and abused people so many times in recent history that they have no credibility. This case is an excellent argument for suit cams that cannot be disabled. I hope that some day we actually have suit cams that can’t be disabled, to keep police in check. It was a 15 year old bmw which has a blue book value of 3-5k and is cheap enough for just about anyone to own and is in a price range that a teenager could afford from a part time job. She is not a banker either, she was a bank teller which is far from a banker and on top of that she was unemployed at the time of the arrest. Caught speaking on things you know nothing about. And you are accepting her ALLEGATION as fact that the NYPD "doubted" she could have owned a BMW. That is an allegation or claim, which you apparently confuse for a substantiated fact.
This woman was diagnosed as mentally unstable by at least TWO eminently qualified physicians at HARLEM HOSPITAL for goodness sakes. Harlem! They have very diverse medical staff and have been serving the black community there for over 100 years. But….you know, "racist white people" (gets you money)! smdh
The court did NOT award damages in this case. It ordered the parties attempt to reach a settlement (pretty common), which it appears the parties were not able to reach. This case is still on the docket and unresolved as of November 22, 2016.
Her attorney is the one that said she was a banker!!!!
They the case was resolved not revealing damages. Damages would be tremendous even for a homeless woman. FALSE ARREST, FALSE IMPRISONMENT, RAPE, RAVISHMENT, ASSAULT.
