A court in the United States has awarded a woman up to $6.15 million for suffering gross sexual abuse from an on-duty police officer.
According to the Filming Cops, the incident happened in Los Angeles (LA) on September 22, 2010. After a four year legal battle, the LA County Board of Supervisor has agreed to pay the amount to the woman. In order to protect her identity, the woman was identified as Lindsay in court.
The Filming Cops reports that the settlement totals an amount that is one of the largest sums paid out by the LA County Board. The sheriff’s department will pay at least one third of the amount and the remaining will be paid by an insurance carrier.
According to the account of the story, on the day of the attack, Officer Jose Rigoberto Sanchez was on a routine patrol. At around 1:20 am, Officer Sanchez saw Lindsay at a gas station in Palmdale. When Lindsay moved from the gas station, Sanchez followed her and later stopped her for driving under the influence of alcohol.
He had her license suspended and, in the process, told her she was “hot.” He then coerced her into submitting to his sexual advances to avoid being arrested.
He ordered her to lock her car and instructed her to sit in the back of his patrol vehicle.
Officer Sanchez then offered not to arrest her in return for sexual favors, but Lindsay refused his advances. As a result of Lindsay’s refusal, Sanchez drove her down a distant dirty road.
A summary prepared by the sheriff’s office, described the spot where he raped Lindsay as a “remote, dark, and isolated area.”
He then forced the woman to have oral, vaginal and anal sex with him against the hood of his patrol car. After this, he drove her back to where her vehicle was parked and asked Lindsay to give him her phone number in case he wanted to “mess around” again.
Traumatized by the incident, Lindsay then gathered up the courage and reported the incident to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Lindsay later filed a lawsuit in 2011.
During the trial of the case, it came to light that just two days after raping Lindsay, Sanchez stopped another woman for driving under the influence of alcohol. During this encounter, Sanchez asked the woman to perform sexual acts with him in exchange for not arresting her. The woman refused. Her friend later saved the situation, preventing her from becoming another victim.
He admitted to both raping Lindsay and attempting to sexually bribe the second woman. The court sentenced him to nine years in prison. He is also to register as a sex offender.
During his sentencing, Lindsay was present and told the court that Sanchez’s actions had changed her forever.
The victim said she has lived in fear every day for the three years following her rape. She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
“You essentially murdered a part of me… A police officer is supposed to serve and protect. I had nowhere to run because the one who I should have been able to run to for help was the one harming me. You deserve far more prison time than nine years. I know that at some point you will get out of your prison, but me? I am stuck in mine for the rest of my life,” she said.
