Cuba’s Lung Cancer Vaccine Now Being Developed For The US

A cure to cancer? Does it really exist? Well other than the hidden cures that will imprison you for life and the ridiculously overpriced legal treatment it seems as though there is!

Cuba has apparently had a promising vaccine to lung cancer for years now. As you may already know, Cuba is home to some of the best and most inventive biotech research in the world, and it seems to have paid off.

The Obama Administration has been trying to stabilise relations with Cuba for some time now and they may have just passed the deal. During April this year, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited the Havana, Roswell Park Cancer Institution to pass an agreement with Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology in order to begin development for a new lung cancer vaccine. Clinical trials are to be held in the US with researchers beginning to request approvals by the US Food and Drug Administration. “The chance to evaluate a vaccine like this is a very exciting prospect,” says Candace Johnson, CEO of Roswell Park.

One of the things that may allow this new drug to easily be pre-scripted to you is that of its relatively cheap price to store and produce, something that has not been seen in a [legal?] cancer drug before. Another thing that makes this drug noticeably stand out from others is that it has a low toxicity level, hopefully eliminating some of the negative effects from cancer treatment.

The Center for Molecular Immunology has passed over the drug’s documentation to Roswell Park for an FDA approval, (Food & Drug Administration) documented data includes how it’s produced, results from past trials and experiments and toxicity data, which again, seems to be impressively low. Johnson hopes to gain approval to begin testing the drug soon and to start clinical trials within a year.

Cuba has some interesting history on how their biotechnology and medical research capabilities got to the high standards that it has today. After a 1981 country-wide dengue fever outbreak hit nearly 350,000 Cubans the government decided that it was time to put more efforts into researching medical and biological advancements, and so these facilities were built and set towards specific goals. These facilities have already achieved some very impress, although unexpected, goals, including a protein that plays a role in human immune response, monoclonal antibodies for kidney transplants and meningitis B & hepatitis B vaccines.

Lung cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Cuba, which plays a big role in why the research for this drug was carried out, in fact, the Molecular Immunology worked on the drug for 25 years before the Ministry of Health made the drug accessible by the public in 2011… for free! And to put the price into perspective, it only costs the government around $1 per shot.

However, don’t let this cheap price tag make the drug look affordable, the US has a wide history of corrupt medical treatment. For example, in the UK an inhaler will either be prescription free, or without a prescription it will only drop you about £1 (around $1.54). In the US an inhaler costs anywhere between $50 and $100. Now taking into fact that this is a vaccine for a form of cancer you can expect to be paying anywhere upwards of $200-$500 per shot.
