Ecocapsule; The future of off grid living?

Have you ever wanted to just drop off the face or the world? Disappear? Go off grid? Many will say “absolutely”. The reality of it all is that most Anons do not have the knowledge nor the desire to live without the basic comforts history has afforded us. Things like running water, electricity and wifi have become so tightly integrated in our lives that even thinking about going out for more than a camping trip creates an anxiety that overshadows every moment or every thought. For some, even the word “camping” sends a shiver. Unless faced with a disaster, most will never choose to get out into nature. There may be some relief for that feeling.

May I present to you, the Ecocapsule; created by Slovakian design firm Nice Architects. Nice describes their unit as an

“ environmentally friendly, self-sufficient eco-pods, that can be towed on a trailer or shipped anywhere in the world, could transform the way we experience the outdoors.”.

The pod is a self-contained “micro-home” designed to support two adults for up to a year (without having to be serviced, resupplied etc…). I imagine this would all be dependent on your knowledge of the outdoors and your personal supply chain.  Although it’s hard to judge size in the pictures, this egg shaped micro home is about the size of a large automobile… except for the height of course. The outside dimensions measure 2.5m high, 4.45m long and 2.25m wide (8.5’ x 14.6’ x  7.4’). It has its own electricity generating system divided between high efficiency solar cells, a self-contained wind turbine and a 9744Wh storage battery.

It also boasts a rainwater collection and storage system with water filters onboard for any water source that the user chooses to have. There is interior and exterior storage compartments, LED lighting, an integrated hot water shower, toilet, sink and cook stove. The Ecocapsule has all of the high tech and up to date luxuries an Anon could want for a care free stay just about anywhere you choose to drop it. Oh, right… there could be a small problem. Although it’s the perfect size to fit inside a shipping container, can be put onto a truck or airlifted to whatever point you choose to set it… lack of mobility is a definite downfall… unless you have a large wagon and few Oxen the capsule will go nowhere due mostly, to its 1500Kg (3300lb) weight. Given this predicament the architects at Nice are currently developing a chassis for these pods to make transporting them a bit easier.

The price? We will find out later in 2015 according to the company. I do not expect it to be affordable to the everyday anon but, time will reveal.

I wholeheartedly give salutation to the designers for building in the “earth friendly” technologies and putting the whole system together in an efficient and adorable little package. In reality? It’s a high tech, compact camper or caravan trailer without wheels and once you purchase it, you may not have the funds to live anywhere else but, your little egg of nirvana.
