We all know that Fox news promotes a radical right wing agenda, and in doing so, aligns itself with organizations who push the same propaganda. Such is the case with the Crime Prevention Research Center. Fox news recently promoted a study conducted by the CPRC that claims white officers don’t unfairly target black suspects. The blatant attempt to promote this study as reality is not beneath Fox, who have time and time again, led the way in spewing fake news.
According to the study, which was based on data from 2013-2015, “when either the violent crime rate or demographics of a city are accounted for, we find that white police officers are not significantly more likely to kill a black suspect.” The statement in the opening paragraph fundamentally admits to skewing the numbers in order to achieve the pre-planned statistic they were looking for. The report goes on to say, “for the estimates where we know the race of the officer who killed the suspect, the ratio of the rate that blacks are killed by black versus white officers is large — ranging from 3 to 5 times larger. However, because the media may under report the officer’s race when black officers are involved, other results that account for the fact that a disproportionate.”
The study looked at the 2,699 police killings from 2013-2015, in approximately 1,500 cities. They attempted to take into consideration the cases of shootings where the race of the officer was not identified. The fundamental argument of the report was that the number of suspects killed by non-white officers has resulted in flawed results of past studies, and that when taken into consideration, there is no disproportionate killing of black people. The report also attempts to claim that black neighborhoods are disproportionately wrought with violence, therefore police are more likely to shoot suspects in black neighborhoods. “Black neighborhoods tend to experience higher crime rates. Therefore, race-neutral police randomly assigned to neighborhoods will encounter more criminal activities in black neighborhoods. As such, they can be expected to employ lethal force against a higher proportion of black suspects.” When you disregard or manipulate statistics to reach a pre-determined conclusion, the odds of you reaching that conclusion are great.
The CPRC is a conservative pro-police, pro-gun organization. One look at their website shows a string of articles pushing what would appear to be an Alt-right agenda. The report ignores the fundamental cause of individual racism in police, and that this is the widespread institutionalized racism handed down from city governments to the police department and through the chain of command.
The cycle of poverty is real and supported by the policing for profit system. A traffic ticket becomes a court date, which becomes a warrant that contributes to the prison industrial complex. This shapes not only the victims of this system in the African American community, it shapes the attitudes of police who come to see the community as their primary source of problems. The system that creates the problems we see in the black community continually denies the problem in the first place, and the Fox report is a perfect reflection of this.
