The European Union has only stood for 20 years, and already many residents of Europe are beginning to realize that the union is not in their best interests and that their governments have lied to them from the beginning: European countries are now deeper in debt and in worse economic situations than they were in prior to the creation of the union.
Sharing an integrated economic and political system is difficult, as different countries have different priorities and abilities to meet the expectations of the others. The people of different European countries, are beginning to speak out to demand a decentralization of power.
Austrian residents have recently launched a petition demanding that their government leave the European Union for the sake of their economy. The petition will need to gain 100,000 signatures by July 1 in order to be considered by the national parliament; it had obtained 260000 signatures.
Inge Rauscher, a 66-year-old man who started the campaign, wants to disassociate Austria from the massive centralized government because he believes they do not share the same values as Austrians- a truth that many countries that were forced into union would discover only too late; religious differences, racial ones and cultural ones often lead to chaos and violence.
“We want to go back to a neutral and peace-loving Austria, ” Rauscher said.
“We are not any longer a sovereign state in the European Union. Over 80 percent of all essential legislation is being imposed by Brussels, not by elected commissioners. In our view, Europe is not a democracy. The European Parliament does not even have legislative powers,” Rauscher told Sputnik Radio.
“This initiative is open for all political parties and we expect a broad support. This is proved by our numerous conversations with the citizens over the past month,” he added.
Austria is not the only country to consider leaving the European Union; In the face of a debt crisis, residents of Greece have also been calling for an exit to the extra layer of government control. In Italy last month, a petition with 200,000 signatures called for the country to exit the European Union.
