During her stint as the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton maintained a private email server at her home—a controversial issue which gained her frequent criticism. Recently, investigators found that there have been attempts to hack her email. In total, as many as 5 such instances of the attempts have been discovered. According to the Associated Press, the malicious applications were activated by clicking on these 5 malwares; however, it is not certain whether Clinton clicked on these malwares.
The malwares were detected in the released emails’ cache of Hillary Clinton. Each of the five emails were sent to Hillary Clinton on 3rd August, 2011. The emails themselves were sent within the space of four hours. The malwares were designed to send sensitive information to three computers outside of the United States, at least one of which is located in Russia. The emails received by Hillary Clinton, were in the form of speeding tickets sent from New York.
According to security analysts, there is no evidence that indicates whether Hillary Clinton had clicked on these emails or their attachments, or that any of the information was actually transferred to these three computers outside the United States of America.
Nick Merrill, a spokesperson for the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, has said that none of these emails were accessed and there has been no breach of the information. These emails were found in the spam folder, just like any other spam message. Almost every email accounts get spam mail, and these emails received by Hillary Clinton are no different.
Despite this, the emails and the malicious attachments are a matter of concern. It shows that not even the secretary of state is safe, and the cybercriminals are targeting government officials as well as top government authorities.
