Did you ever think that your dryer would notify you when your laundry is done? Well it is quite easier than you think to control the mind of your gadgets with the help of open-source Green Bean module which was announced on September 18, 2014 by GE at MakerCon and is available for only $20.
Green Bean connects to GE appliances
Well 20 bucks is a lot cheaper than spending thousands of dollars for the latest appliances.
Green Build comes out of FirstBuild, GE’s open innovation and co-creation platform which is attached to a micro factory in Louisville, Kentucky. In simple words Green Bean is a small module that gives you the power to be able to control stuffs like you fans, sensors in your refrigerator and the heating elements of your oven.
“Ideas are only the starting point,” mentioned FirstBuild’s Taylor Dawson. “By giving anyone and everyone a direct path into the brain of our home appliances, we are endowing them with the ability to reprogram and reimagine the way that their appliances could work. Green Bean is limited only by your creativity and programming skills.”
Green Bean’s JavaScript based SDK allows hackers to create several apps that connects the appliances with things like Smart Phone, Raspberry Pi and is available on github. While is not of much use for people who don’t have any programming knowledge (though Green Bean is open source), the FirstBuild community have already started creating and sharing some interesting mods for appliances and also developing new hardware to take advantages of it.
In addition as we mentioned earlier about laundry, there is a laundry notification app too which is compatible with Android Wear, or a camera mounted to a fridge door which will snap a pic of what you took from the refrigerator and will upload to the chosen device whereas other modes have the ability to control the temperature of particular wines or you can even defrost meat using a custom “chill hub” – essentially a USB hub that connects to added compartments, which can be individually heated or cooled in the appliance and can be controlled via the Green Bean.
The Green Bean module is available at the retails price for $19.95 and is available through FirstBuild.com.

this device will be a very powerful tool based on the users imagination lol but i think am gonnna have to get really serious about my programming
This is so neat. I clearly need to learn more about coding and hacking – I’d rather do that instead of buying new appliances. Their site it pretty cool too – http://bit.ly/1bgreenbean
