The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that it has executed one of its nuclear scientists – who leaked the country’s secret nuclear information to the United States in return for millions of dollars in bribes.
The executed scientist, Shahram Amiri saga began in 2009, during the tenure of the current Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State for the United States.
Amiri was said to be making a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. All of a sudden, it was reported that he has been vanished without traces. A few months later, Iran accused the United States of kidnapping Amiri with Saudi Arabia’s cooperation, but the United States denied the accusation.
However, in June 2010, Amiri appeared in two videos, claiming that he had been kidnapped by the United States. He said the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had offered him a huge sum of money for Iran’s controversial nuclear project. Amiri claimed in the videos further, that he rejected the money, and because he refused to cooperate, he has been badly tortured by the CIA officials. He ended by saying that he wanted to return to Iran.
After these videos, a month later, Amiri arrived in Iran. He was received by Iranian officials as a hero. However, he was arrested a year later after his hero welcome. Iranian intelligence officials have had access to a leaked United States secret document that Amiri had been paid millions of dollars for the information he disclosed. Amiri was charged with treason. His story of being kidnapped was labeled as fairytale by Iranian officials.
Amiri was found guilty and given what was thought to be a 10-year sentence, but it turns out that Iran had actually sentenced him to death.
On August 7, Iran’s judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei said in a statement to the Iranian Student News Agency: “Amiri had access to confidential military secrets and was connected to our No. 1 enemy, the Great Satan. He was sentenced to death in primary court, and the sentence was confirmed by Supreme Court.” The name the Great Satan is what Iranian officials regularly use to refer to the United States.
Hillary Clinton’s Role in Shahram Amiri’s Death
As said earlier, the Democratic presidential candidate was serving as the United State’s Foreign Minister when Amiri appeared in the country. Clinton instead of using the State Department’s email server to conduct official business, decided to use her private server.
In some of the emails, which were part of the emails released by the State Department last year (pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request when it came to light that Clinton had hosted the emails using her private server), Clinton discussed Mr Amiri in them, with a colleague diplomat.
In one of the messages sent to Clinton on July 5 2010, by the then acting special envoy of the United States Secretary of State for Eurasian energy Richard Morningstar, Amiri’s refusal to stay in the United States was discussed.
Mr Morningstar wrote to Clinton: “Per the subject we discussed, we have a diplomatic, ‘psychological’ issue, not a legal issue. Our friend [Amiri] has to be given a way out. We should recognize his concerns and frame it in terms of a misunderstanding with no malevolent intent and that we will make sure there is no recurrence. Our person won’t be able to do anything anyway. If he has to leave, so be it.”
When this message was sent to Clinton by Morningstar, two weeks later, Amiri left the United States to Iran.
According to critics, the Iranians even had access to some of these messages on Clinton’s private server before they were made public. It is believed hackers had access to Clinton’s email, and it contributed to the leak, which she had used her private server to conduct official business.
The Republican Senator from the state of Arkansas, Tom Cotton; speaking on the popular news show on CBS-Face the Nation, criticized Clinton for acting reckless with the country’s secret information leading to the death of Amiri. He said this shows that the Democratic nominee is unfit to serve as president of the country.
“In the emails that were on Hillary Clinton’s private server, there were conversations among her senior advisors about this gentleman. That goes to show just how reckless and careless her decisions were to put that kind of highly classified information on a private server, but I think her judgment is not suited to keep this country safe,” Senator Cotton said.
