James Cameron: Changing Our Diets Will Halt Climate Change

In an opinion piece for Newsweek, the Oscar-winning director wrote about the importance of adopting a plant-based diet to prevent climate change from worsening.

Earlier this December, director James Cameron wrote a piece for Newsweek to address how a balanced, vegan diet can help prevent climate change from worsening.

Over the past month, the magazine published a series of opinion pieces while the COP21 conference on climate change took place in Paris. The event recently wrapped up on December 11th.

In Cameron’s piece titled “Halting Climate Change Is As Simple As Changing Our Diets,” the Oscar-winning director wrote:

“We should all be very aware that climate change isn’t some hypothetical thing that our children are going to face in the future. It’s happening now, with worsening droughts, agriculture crashes, and rising sea levels that will prompt the mass displacement of millions of people. It’s insidious and a lot like rabies, as I always say. By the time you’re symptomatic, it’s too late for a cure.”

He adds that while climate negotiators were targeting emissions reductions, they missed out on an “additional arrow in their quiver to make up for the overage in emissions. It’s simple: change our diets.”

In the opinion piece, he says that animal agriculture is a “huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions through its production of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxides.” He adds, “it’s actually larger than the entire transportation sector.”

Cameron does admit that despite its emissions, we do need transportation. Animals, on the other hand, don’t need to be eaten, he states.

“I’m not saying that from an ethical, animal-rights standpoint; I’m saying it from a health standpoint. Nutritionally, we don’t need to eat animals and animal products. And we’re actually much healthier if we don’t. This has been proven; there’s a depth and breadth of scientific analysis behind that statement.”

Reducing one’s consumption of animals, he argues, will not only help the environment but will also help those who are anxious about climate and change and want to know what they can do about it.

“The single biggest thing an individual can do is to shift more towards a plant-based diet,” he writes. “It’s a win-win. It’s a win for your health. It’s a win for the environment.”

The articulate, well-written piece is worth a read.

This isn’t the first time Cameron has spoken out about the link between health, climate change, and veganism. Earlier this year, he wrote a similar article for Men’s Journalattributing climate change behind his reason for switching to a diet free of animal products.

In addition, he is well-known for supporting the US’ first all vegan school founded by his wife, Suzy Amis-Cameron, and her sister. Located in Calabasas, California, MUSE School is a private pre-kindergarten to 9th-grade school with an environmental focus.

  1. Changing our diet will be like farting in a thunderstorm! Climate change is a natural event and just as the Human race is evolving the earth is still evolving. We cannot control the Solar flares, we cannot control the lunar cycles, we cannot control the natural events such as vegetation rot and deadfall or volcanic eruptions.
The only reason these vegheads are pushing this agenda is because of the animal produced methanol so they don’t want anyone consuming animals! Have they ever thought that their diet is causing, to them, unknown illnesses due to the lack of the right protein, MCFA’s, vitamins and minerals.
Instead of culling the food chain animals try giving them antiflatulence treatment, that is not beyond our knowledge,
THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! If the changing of dietary habits does not stop Naturally caused Climate change (which it will not really make a difference considering that the Human race causes only 5-7% of the greenhouse gases) what? or who? will be next on the Frankenscience list of “possible” (read invented) causes of this natural phenomenon? THAT’s RIGHT ! The meat eaters and then when the Frankenscience advisors realise they are not winning the battle of Naturally caused climate change will they advocate exterminating the human race?????
Don’t believe the court jesters on climate change we the human race can only control or reduce the 5-7% that we are responsible for! Who the hell will control the other 90+% ???
We should task some real scientists on producing alternatives allowing us to adapt to the evolution of the Planet that WILL (most certainly WILL) be caused by NATURAL phenomenon.
May I suggest that James Cameron control his verbal flatulence and get real, turning the human race into vegetarians will not stop the production of methanol as the harvesting requirements of any vegetarian crop will increase dramatically due to demand, with it’s subsequent dramatic increase in plant waste which will rot and produce even more methanol!

    • They claim the CATTLE and PIGS we eat are producing the methanol, not the humans from eating them. But you are right about plant waste also creating similar gasses. this is not a solution to anything. We are NOT biologically vegetarians. We are not “omnivores” either. We are selective carnivores. It is the consumption of ANIMAL PROTEIN that allowed for the increase in brain cells and our intelligence. We can become vegetarians when we figure out how to produce a better quality protein without the consumption of animals, and hopefully without further destroying the planet, and that may not be too far away. But for now plant-based diets may have a cleansing effect and produce a feeling of increased energy and wellness TEMPORARILY, but over a period of years actually causes accelerated aging in humans. This is no secret. The increase of plant based non-foods (for humans) such as wheat, corn and sugar may well be involved in the REVERSAL of the evolution of our intelligence and adaptability. Plant-based non-foods are responsible for cancer, diabetes and heart disease and have been pushed on people by governments for generations because this kind of diet makes us fatter, more docile and apathetic. Unnatural agriculture has changed the way our planet functions and encouraged devastating damage to our ecosystems. We definitely need to change our eating habits, by decentralizing our food sources. We need to take responsibility for our food, our land, our animals, our industry, our means of travel. Replacing our selfish wasteful, lazy habits with a more mindful orientation towards life would do a lot more for the planet than eating more crap we were never meant to eat.

  2. The warmist fearmongerers cannot even call “climate change” global warming any longer
because, well the last 18 years of satellite temperature data show no change in the average temperature around the world.

    An “inconvenient truth!”

If you want to go vegan…fine. That’s your choice. But don’t try and foist that lifestyle on everyone in the name of saving the earth from a changing climate, aka “weather.” That is utter nonsense and the height of narcissism to think our food habits have any effect on nature.

The deluded and hypocritical Hollywood crowd could do a lot more good if they were to focus on exposing the govenment’s massive illegal and unhealthy Geoengineering Agenda which 99% of the American population has no ideas exists.
