Recently, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron was caught on video at Buckingham Palace telling the Queen in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, that Nigeria and Afghanistan are the two most “fantastically corrupt countries in the world.”
Mr Cameron and other dignitaries were at the palace for an event marking the Queen’s 90th birthday, and were also preparing to host an anti-corruption summit in London.
“We’ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain… Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world,” PM Cameron said in the captured video.
However, some experts on corruption and organized crime hold a different view. In the latest news, the famous Italian journalist, Roberto Saviano has said Britain is, rather, the most corrupt country in the world.
Saviono is the author of international bestsellers Gomorrah and Zero Zero Zero. The Gomorrah book is a non-fiction investigative work he published in 2006. Saviono had infiltrated the Italian criminal organization known as Camorra, based in the region of Campania and its capital Naples, documenting their secret activities.
As of December 2008, the book has sold almost 4 million copies worldwide. Saviono became an instant “hot cake,” with various Italian criminal organizations threatening to kill him. The death threats led to a public outcry from fellow writers, including some Nobel laureates such as Desmond Tutu, Mikhail Gorbachev and Orphan Pamuk, who warned that the Camorra mafias are a threat to security and public order.
Public signatures were collected on the web site of the Italian newspaper- La Repubblica, calling for the government to protect him. The Italian Ministry of the Interior responded by placing Saviono under police protection since then.
At the Hay Literary Festival on Saturday May 28th, 2016, Saviono told audience at the event that the United Kingdom is the most corrupt country in the world. The Hay Festival of Literature & Arts is an annual 10-day literature festival held in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, Wales. Saviono was accompanied by several security guards as the event.
He warned those present at the event that the financial institutions were allowing ‘criminal capitalism’ to thrive through offshore holdings. He said bluntly, that if the United Kingdom votes to leave the European Union, the country will be more vulnerable to organized crime. The United Kingdom is set to have a referendum on 23rd June, on whether or not to remain in the European Union.
“If I asked you what is the most corrupt place on Earth you might tell me well it’s Afghanistan, maybe Greece, Nigeria, the South of Italy and I will tell you it’s the UK. It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital. 90 per cent of the owners of capital in London have their headquarters offshore. Jersey and the Cayman’s are the access gates to criminal capital in Europe and the UK is the country that allows it. That is why it is important why it is so crucial for me to be here today and to talk to you because I want to tell you , this is about you, this is about your life, this is about your government. Leaving the EU means allowing this to take place. It means allowing the Qatari societies, the Mexican cartels, the Russia Mafia to gain even more power and HSBC has paid £2 billion Euros in fines to the US government, because it confessed that it had laundered money coming from the cartels and the Iranian companies. We have proof, we have evidence,” Telegraph quoted Mr Saviono as saying at the event.
It is said Saviano first started writing about organized crime in Italy in the early 2000s, following the death of his local priest who had written an essay criticizing the dealings of the Camorra. Many observers have agreed with the comments of Saviono that Britain is the most corrupt country in the world, urging leaders of the country to find a best solution to tackle the problem.
