A gunman from Colorado Springs, United States, has gone on a shooting spree, injuring at least nine people and killing three, including a university police officer. The university police officer has been identified as Garrett Swasey.
The man, identified as Robert Lewis Dear, 57, surrendered to police after carrying out the heinous attack at the Planned Parenthood premises, a nationwide health provider that carries out abortions. In the past, the Planned Parenthood premises has received many violent threats.
The incident has triggered the old debate of gun control in the US, and President Obama has called for national dialogue on how to prevent the indiscriminate use of weapons in the country.
As Dear faces charges at the El Paso County Jail for the crime he has committed, commentators and observers are also looking at the incident, juxtaposing it with the public’s heightened fear of accepting refugees. Many believe that accepting refugees will pose a security threat, as they [refugees] may later carry out terrorist attacks against citizens in the country.
Despite the fact that the Paris attackers had no connection with these refugees, many Western nations, including the US, are reducing support and accommodation efforts for refugees fleeing the violence in the Middle East.
The usuncut describes this attack at the Planned Parenthood premises, as one of the many hundreds of ‘home-grown terrorist attacks’ being carried out by white US citizens.
Chris Ingraham, a writer for the Washington Post, even tweeted a graphic that shows there has been more mass shootings in 2015 than days passed in 2015. As you can see in the graphic below, we have seen approximately 335 days so far this year, but there have been 351 mass shootings in America.

According to statistics, some 785,000 refugees have made their way into the US since the 9/11 attack. However, in the last 15 years, only one instance of a refugee being arrested for terrorism has been recorded. According to reports, two Iraqi refugees were apprehended for allegedly conspiring with al-Qaeda cells in the US.
Refugees are required to endure a thorough screening process before entering the US. As this video from ATTN.com describes, Syrian refugees currently entering the US are carefully selected for settlement, making it virtually impossible for anyone connected to terrorist groups to gain entry. This means the public’s current state of fear has been misplaced. To put it simply, accepting refugees does not pose a threat to American citizens within the US.
US Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), pointed out the obvious but uncomfortable truth in a recent public statement. In the statement, Brown explained that terrorism is not connected to race or religion; instead, it is an action carried out by an individual or a group of people.
Brown was quoted as saying: “They are generally white males, who have shot up people in movie theaters and schools. Those are terrorist attacks; they’re just different kinds of terrorists.”
Therefore, once these figures have been compared to the amount of terrorist attacks carried out by refugees since 9/11 in America, it becomes clear that the refugees are not the real threat.
However, it is very easy to see that ‘white terrorism’ is a greater threat to America than people fleeing war zones with children in tow.
Observers say if the US government is serious about stopping terrorism; it has plenty of work to do in its own backyard. In fact, maybe the US government should start with the right-wing extremists like Robert Lewis Dear, the man who was responsible for the heinous attack at the Planned Parenthood premises in Colorado Springs.
