Meet The Teens Who Have Invented A Color-Changing Condom To Detect STIs

Three teenagers from the Isaac Newton’s Academy in East London-United Kingdom (UK) have invented a new condom that is capable of detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) during sexual intercourse.

The teens-Muaz Nawaz, 13, Daanyaal Ali, 14, and Chirag Shah, 14, were said to have had this brilliant idea when they found out that there is big problem with STIs in the UK.

The UK’s National Health Service has said in the past that chlamydia is the most common STI and it is easily passed on during sexual intercourse between partners.

It is said the condom in theory can detect an infection both in the wearer and the partner during intercourse. Ali was quoted by Take Part as saying “We wanted to create something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors’’.

According to the CNN, the condoms are still at the conceptual stage but the developers have been approached by a condom manufacturer that believed it can make their idea a reality. “We really want to make this a realistic thing, but we understand that it is not the easiest thing in the world to do,” Nawaz said.

Shah was optimistic that their invention will make a difference in society. He said in an interview “This kind of inspired us to make a condom, as it could save hundreds of thousands of lives”.

Detailing the nature of the condom, the developers said the condom is called S.T.EYE. It is made with a layer embedded molecules that identify different strains of bacteria and viruses. Once the condom comes in contact with bacteria or viruses that cause an STI during sexual intercourse, antibodies in the condom would recognize the virus or the bacteria and change color. The exact color will depend on the STI it has detected.

A green hue signifies chlamdyia, while yellow stands for herpes, blue for syphilis, and purple for the human papillomavirus.

The inventors won the TeenTech Awards in the health category for their colorful contraceptive invention. The awards encourage teenagers to explore science, engineering and technology. The boys won £1,000 ($1,568) and have been invited to Buckingham Palace along with the other category winners by the awards’ patron, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, the CNN reported.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million people acquire a sexually transmitted infection every day.

In the US, it is said one in two sexually active Americans will contract an STI by age 25, and more than half will contract one at some point in their lifetime. An estimated 93 million people in Africa and 26 million people in the Middle East are said to be living with STIs.

From the above statistics, many believe their invention will open up a new chapter in the fight against STIs. But health experts say their invention needs more research and human trials before making it to drugstore shelves around the world. Further testing would also help identify the condoms’ accuracy in detecting such diseases.

    • First off, that looks like a spam email. Second, you don’t have to capitalize the name of the disease as if trying to emphasize it each time. Third, quit spamming because I’m sure no one is gonna pay for what is most likely a placebo. Oh, and one more thing, that email is also flagged as spamming, figured that out now that I looked into it, and it’s very very easy to find where you live through that. So unless you want me to come to your house, and shit on your doorstep, stop the damn spamming.
