Netanyahu Reveals Israel is Planning to Build a Wall Around Itself

1

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has said that his country is determined to encircle itself with a wall to keep “predators” out of the country.

Mr Netanyahu made this known while visiting a construction site of a new wall bordering Jordan. According to Al Jazeera, the wall on the Jordanian border is meant to keep out desperate refugees fleeing for their safety. The network also said Netanyahu directly referred to Arabs living in neighboring countries, as “predators”.

“In the state of Israel as I see it, there’ll be a fence around all of it. We’re surrounded by predators and we need to protect ourselves”, Al Jazeera quoted the Israeli leader as saying, during his visit to the construction site.

The construction of the 30km wall was started in September 2015 following a call from some Israeli politicians to show compassion and take Syrian refugees. The wall is being built along the southern border between Israel and Jordan. The wall will be a continuation from the 240km barrier that already runs alongside  Israel’s border with Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

Apart from the politicians call for compassion, human rights activists in Israel also urged the country to consider the Syrian refuges plight, due to the ongoing civil war in the country. Netanyahu argued that he will not allow Israel to be submerged by a wave of illegal migrants and risk them carrying out terrorist activity in Israel.

According to a translation posted on Netanyahu’s spokesperson Twitter page, Israel is planning to encircle itself with a complete wall.  The Twitter post said “We are preparing a multi-year plan to encircle Israel with fences to defend ourselves in the Middle East as it is now and as it is expected to be”.

In the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which is officially considered to be a territory belonging to Syria that Israel annexed after the 1967 war, a wall has been built there. And the most notorious among all these walls is the one that runs within the occupied West Bank.

Human rights activists have criticized these walls, saying they limit the Palestinian’s freedom of movement in the occupied territories, something they are entitled to under international law.

The Israeli government has showed no signs of stopping. It is determined more than ever to continue the ‘wall project’, saying it is for security purposes.
