In defiance against the UN, North Korea have successfully tested a solid-fuel rocket engine, which would increase the power of their ballistic rockets, according to a recent report by Reuters.
If the claim is proven true, North Korea is continuing their ICBM programme at a maddened pace, regardless of the imposed sanctions so far put against them. “(Kim) noted with great pleasure that the successful test … helped boost the power of ballistic rockets capable of mercilessly striking hostile forces,” KCNA news agency said.
The North have had capabilities for some time, but have never publicly displayed their military advances to this extent. Many experts are concerned that this is another step in the direction of developing ICBMs capable of threatening the United States. Threats have also been made by the North against Washington and Seoul, pre-empting nuclear strikes.
These latest actions follow a series of short range rockets fired into the sea, and the atmospheric reentry of a ballistic missile. There have also been claims that ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads will soon be tested.
According to the Associated Press, and MSN: “North Korea is known to use liquid propellants for its main ballistic missiles that target South Korea, U.S. bases in the Asia-Pacific region and the American mainland.” This latest threat also follows the North’s angry response to the continuation of U.S.-South Korean military drills. North Korea has announced its ability to launch “artillery bombardment to ‘instantly destroy’ South Korea’s presidential palace.”
