Silicon Valley, the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is located in part of the state of California in the United States, is known to be home to many of the world’s largest high-tech corporations and thousands of startup companies.

This makes the area one of the richest areas of the world. But according to a special investigation, it appears the big and famous personalities who have made the Valley what it is today, have been using something to boost their brains in order to be creative.

It has been revealed that many of the inventors and billionaires in the Valley have been using the drug known as Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) for years now. LSD is also known as acid. It is a psychedelic drug known for its psychological effects. The drug alters awareness of the surroundings and perceptions. It is used mainly as a recreational drug and for spiritual reasons. LSD was discovered by the Swiss chemist, Albert Hofmann in 1938. In the United States, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classifies LSD as Schedule I drug.

A veteran Silicon Valley engineer, Kevin Herbert revealed to CNN Money that LSD has played a key role during his days working as an engineer for Cisco Systems. He also said many of his colleagues in the Valley at the time saw psychedelic drugs, in general, as a weapon to be used to help solve difficult problems.

He said: “So, I don’t think there is such a thing as recreational LSD use. I would be at a Grateful Dead show, high on LSD … and something about my work would just come to me.”

According to Herbert, many of his colleagues during his time were younger. He said many of them today occupy key positions in the Valley. Herbert also confirms that on every weekend, they go for LSD trips to ingest the drug.

During the investigation by CNN Money on whether the drug is widely used by personalities in the Valley, the reporters confirmed that they encountered many engineers and developers who pleaded anonymity, admitting that they use the drug to enhance their creativity.

A Silicon Valley investor and author of “The 4-Hour Workweek,” Tim Ferriss boldly told the reporters that he knows many successful entrepreneurs in the Valley who dabble in psychedelics.

“The billionaires I know, almost without exception, use hallucinogens on a regular basis. They’re trying to be very disruptive and look at the problems in the world … and ask completely new questions,” Ferriss revealed.

Another employee of one of the biggest Silicon Valley companies pleading anonymity, said psychedelics have helped him make a good career choice in the Valley. He said: “I have a habit of boxing up difficult thoughts and emotions I’m having, and I find psychedelics good for unpacking that stuff.”

A former high level employee of a major software company in the Valley, in the late 1990s, also revealed he was taking psychedelic trips with the specific intent of working on software problems. After one such successful psychedelic trip, he came up with design ideas, features and architectural improvements to a piece of software today used by millions of people worldwide. He requested the company he worked for should not be named.

Some developers also admitted they still go to the annual Burning Man gathering in the Nevada desert, adding that it is an experience best enjoyed on psychedelics. The Burning Man is an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance, in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Many of the attendees are said to be in the technology industry.

According to observers, psychedelics have a long history in Silicon Valley. Daniel Kottke, a college friend and early employee of Steve Jobs, has said in the past that he used to ingest LSD with Mr Jobs.

“He was very forthcoming about that, about psychedelics being very helpful for getting him in touch with creativity,” Kottke said of Jobs on psychedelics. Jobs himself has publicly admitted taking LSD to enhance his creativity.
