It’s been on-again off-again news for a few years now: will North Korea restart their nuclear reactor?
It was confirmed in 2015 by the head of the North’s Atomic Energy Institute (AEI) that “normal operations” had started in the Yongbyon nuclear complex, which was shut down in 2007.
As per mainstream media, North Korea has been reported as shockingly reactivating a plant this week, according to”‘indications.” Reports by the UN atomic watchdog that a plant has been reactivated in 2016, for reprocessing plutonium, has come at a timely fashion when the world monitors Kim Jong-un.
The reports closely echo the sentiment of those written six months ago, suggesting that perhaps this is rekindled, only to remind those of the West of lurking North Korean sentiment.
The Yongbyon nuclear reactor has been on the radar since 2013, when the Korean government began renovating it. Since then, there have been regular reminders of their nuclear capabilities. The North Korean AEI director weighted in on the argument mid last year, openly stating that the West aren’t being paranoid.
“If the U.S. and other hostile forces persistently seek their reckless hostile policy … (North Korea) is fully ready to cope with them with nuclear weapons any time,” he said.
The West can no longer claim this as a surprise. The main argument one can take contention with is the AFP, who reported on both the 2015 and 2016 articles, which have used similar AEI quotes, and yet claim the date of the activity picked up by satellite is “unknown.” Hmmm.
This isn’t an argument in support of a hostile North Korea, it’s an argument about regurgitated statements that aim to scare the western masses at a time of somewhat historical elections both in the United States and Australia. Almost nine months apart, these articles say the same thing, claiming it is all new information…
“Developing a working ICBM would be seen as a game-changer, bringing the mainland United States within range of a possible nuclear strike,” reports the AFP in 2015. Admitting in the 2016 report, this knowledge had existed in the “early 2000s.”
The campaigning of western propaganda media must be recognised for what it is.
