Some police officers from Illinois, in the United States of America, have been caught on camera using a racial slur against an African-American family.
The incident happened in the village of Montgomery in Kane and Kendall Counties. According to the Daily Kos, David Taylor, the victim of the slur was twice targeted, harassed and wrongfully arrested by the officers.
Filming Cops reports that Taylor’s first encounter with the officers was back in 2009, in which he was completely denigrated with the slur in the presence of his family, including his children.
The police department was said to have only suspended one of the officers involved in the incident for three days and followed it up with an out-of-court financial settlement.
However, five years after the incident, Taylor got caught up in the same ugly incident with officers from the same police department. This time, the officers added physical abuse to the name calling and the result was that Taylor nearly ended up behind bars
It was reported in this encounter that Taylor’s family was outside talking to some policemen when Taylor decided to find out what was going on. As soon as he stepped out, one of the police officers asked him his name and before he could say a word, he was violently pinned to the ground and kicked by the officers.
Taylor later told local media that he lost one of his teeth and the right side of his head was also bruised during the assault by the officers. He also said the officers once again used the slur. The incident was captured on camera.
The police said in a statement that Taylor yelled and refused to cooperate with officers when they tried a peaceful arrest… the matter ended up in court.
Taylor’s lawyer, Michael Schmiege, said the officers probably did not know that they would be caught on camera the second time, like the previous incident.
But when the case was presented before Judge Phillip G. Montgomery, he dismissed the case saying that the police officers only took six seconds to push Taylor on the ground, after asking for his name.
Notwithstanding on the court’s decision to dismiss the case, Taylor was set free and he seemed somehow relieved. After the ruling, Taylor told the media, “If I didn’t have that video, I would have been convicted.”
