Popularity, it seems, has its downside. At least if you live in or are visiting Saudi Arabia.
Aziz Al Kassar is a Saudi actor, and the simple act of visiting a shopping mall in Ridyadh led to his arrest. Selfies also played a role in this man’s heinous crime, the abominations.
Surrounded by numerous fans who were keen on getting a selfie with him, he was arrested for “disturbing public order” and mixing with women “unrelated to him.”.
The whole incident was caught on camera, duh, and shows Kassar surrounded by women who were shouting his name. A man dressed in a white robe then appears, grabbing the actor’s shirt and dragging him away.
Kassar was arrested by members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, AKA the religious police.
Although he lives in Kuwait, he made the mistake of going to Saudi Arabia for work- his second mistake was asking his followers for advice on the best place to go shopping in Ridyadh, also telling them when he was coming.
Apparently he did not expect quite so many young women to turn up there.
“I want to clarify that the presence of young women at the mall was not something under my control,”
He also stated that the religious police could have simply warned him ahead of time that his fans were waiting for him there.
“They did not tell me to stay away and that not meeting them was better,” Gulf News quoted Al Kassar as telling Saudi news site Al Marsad. “They initially took away my mobile, but returned it to me [later].”
Although he is released on bail, the investigation into his “indecency” continues. The religious police accuse him of purposely using his social media account to meet women and take photos with them.
