South Korea is a close ally of the West, especially the United States. Therefore, the mainstream media in the West will try as much as possible to suppress this type of news from the country.
But of course, our duty as an alternative media network is to let you know what is happening around the world. Beginning October 2016, South Korea’s president Park Geun-hye has been under public pressure to step down. This follows a damning revelation that Park has allowed her longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil to meddle in the country’s affairs, despite holding no official position in the government.
According to prosecutors who investigated the issue, Park regularly shared state classified documents with Choi, allowing her to tweak speeches and even interfere in national policy. Prosecutors have since indicted Choi for using her influence and access to steal more than $70 million from the country’s corporate titan chaebol.
In the month of November, crowds estimated between 500,000 to 1.5 million thronged the capital city Seoul, demanding the ouster of Park for the scandal. On New Year’s Day, similar protests were repeated in central Seoul, calling for the resignation of the president. Park is now facing a criminal probe over the allegations. Protesters are still planning massive protests this year, and the situation obviously seems that Park will not be the president of the country any longer, eventuating probably by the middle of this year.
However, amid this situation, the woes of Park seem to be far from over. It is from one bizarre scandal to another; her office has once again come under public scrutiny for strange circumstances.
It has emerged that the office of Park made a mass purchase of Viagra while the president and her entourage were making an official state visit to selected African nations. Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction or impotence in men.
This revelation was made by an opposition lawmaker. The lawmaker claimed that Park’s office purchased the little blue pills in 2015, buying both the name brand Viagra and a generic equivalent for the trip to the African nations. It is said the team bought as many as 360 pills.
Responding to the issue, the office of the president admitted making the mass purchase of the pills. However, refuted claims that the pills were meant to treat erectile dysfunction. The office said the Viagra pills were rather meant to treat altitude sickness while the president and her team were visiting the African nations.
The statement from the office of the president said, to get to the countries where the president and her team visited, they had to fly thousands of meters above sea level. This, according to the office, necessitated the purchase of the drug to treat a potential altitude sickness among any member of the team making the trip.
A presidential spokesperson later told reporters the team did not even use the pills, and that the issue has nothing to do with sexual activity.
But many South Koreans dispute the claim from the office of the president, as there is no medical evidence to suggest that Viagra pills can treat altitude sickness.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Park’s office has made strange purchases. In fact, her office has been under public scrutiny for other unorthodox purchases before.
Not long ago, Park’s office bought hundreds of injectable doses of human placenta extract and vitamin shots, both of which are commonly used for detoxification and anti-aging treatments.
When this was made public, a presidential spokesperson defended that the doses were bought for workers at the presidential office, including Park’s bodyguards.
Obviously, the Viagra purchase is adding to the scandals Park is already facing. The situation looks like the South Koreans will soon oust their leader from office.
