Lebanon’s Al Jadeed TV host Rima Karaki cut short an interview with Hani al-Seba’I, a London-based Sunni Muslim scholar, after he told her to shut up and that it was beneath him to be interviewed by a woman.
Rima was interviewing Hani on the recent reports of Christians joining Islamic terror groups in the Middle East, when he took the discussion off course.
“It was at its peak during the 1970’s, with the leftist revolutionary movement. Back then, we saw leftist organizations like the Red Brigades in Italy, the Red Army in Germany, the Baader Meinhof Group …,” he started deflecting. Rima then tried to get Hani back on topic, “At present, what slogans are used to attract [Christians] to these groups?”
This angered Hani, who replied, “Listen, don’t cut me off. I will answer as I please. I will not answer the way you like because I’m here to serve the idea in which I believe.”
“In this studio, I run the show,” Rima snapped back at him, which provoked an angry response from Hani, “Are you done? Shut up so I can talk. It’s beneath me to be interviewed by you. You are a woman who…”
With her palm facing the Hani, Rima then delivered the ultimate punch before cutting off the transmission, “How can a respected Sheik like yourself tell a TV host to shut up? Either there is mutual respect or the conversation is over.”
After Rima posted the video on Twitter, she received widespread support for standing her ground:
