TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – On Saturday, tens of thousands of Israeli citizens gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv with one unified message; Israelis want change. As banners in support of the left-wing Meretz party and the center-left Zionist Union filled the plaza, the crowd collectively clamored for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be ousted from office in the upcoming national elections.
The headline speaker for the event was former Mossad chief Meir Dagan. Dagan, who has been on a tirade of late against the current Prime Minister, has said Netanyahu is “the person who has caused the greatest strategic damage to Israel.” The former Israeli intelligence chief also referred to Netanyahu’s most recent speech to the US congress as ‘bullshit’.
Seemingly on the verge of tears at moments, Dagan stressed that he had no political aspirations of his own. He also told the swarm of spectators that he did not fear Israel’s enemies, rather he feared the leadership in Israel.
A widow of an officer killed in last summer’s Operation Protective Edge, Michal Kastan Keidar also took to the microphone and delivered rousing words against the PM.
“Yes, Mr. Prime Minister, what’s important is life itself, but it’s impossible to speak all the time about Iran and to turn a blind eye to the bloody conflict with the Palestinians which costs us so much blood,” she said.
The rally took place just a week and a half before the national elections on March 17. Pro-Netanyahu supporters are scheduled to assemble next Saturday in the very same square .
