A disturbing video has emerged from Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas, wherein an unarmed white man with his hands up was shot dead by two cops.
The local news channel in Texas, KSAT12, said it obtained the video from a witness to the incident. The video footage showed the man raising his hands in the air before being shot dead by the cops.
The station did not release the entire video, which was recorded with a mobile phone — they stopped it just before the man was shot — however, the station interviewed the witness who recorded the incident, a student named Michael Thomas. He said that because of the recent attention to police and protests over police shootings of civilians, he thought, “Well, maybe I can catch something with my camera.” He added that he hopes his raw video will help in the investigation.
In the video, the man who is not wearing a shirt is seen running. He then stands with his hands raised, before the video stops. Thomas was too far away for his camera to pick up any of what was said between the officers and the man killed, but according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance call when they attempted to subdue the man with non-lethal force, including using tasers and shields, but were unsuccessful in arresting him.
County Sheriff Chief Susan Pamerleau said at a press conference that the suspect had allegedly injured a woman and an 18-month-old child but did admit that the video is disturbing and will be fully investigated.
“Certainly what’s in the video is a cause for concern, but it’s important to let the investigation go through its course so that we can assure a thorough and complete review of all that occurred,” she said.
Both deputies are said to have been with the department for more than 10 years and they are now on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
According to Think Progress, Bexar County deputies fatally shot 11 people between 2003 and 2013, and only one deputy was indicted for murder in one of those shootings — an off-duty deputy fired eight shots and killed an unarmed man following a minor car accident.
Also, according to the VICE News, since 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot dead by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, police in the US have killed at least 1,083 Americans. From this figure, it has been calculated, on average, that police have killed nearly three people per day. Even this figure has become far outdated judging from the rate at which citizens are killed by police across the US, since this report was made public in early August of 2015.

Hands Up! Don’t Shoot! I really don’t think that verbal exchange of any kind was the reason to shoot and kill this man. And attempting to use non-lethal means to subdue him, really? I do support our police, but I do not support this!
