On June 26, 2015, the United States became the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage. While the US Supreme Court ruled that the denial of marriage licenses and recognition to same-sex couples violates the Due Process and the Equal Protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, we saw many knee-jerk reactions from Americans on the judgement.

Here’s looking at the 20 countries which legalized same-sex marriage before America, the impact on the first 10, and how their citizens reacted to the landmark ruling:

The Netherlands (2001)

The Netherlands, world’s first country to legalize same-sex marriage, is among the 10 happiest countries in the world.

Belgium (2003)

In 2007, a UNICEF report ranked Belgium the best country for children’s educational well-being.

Canada (2005)

Canada did it ten years ago and nothing went to hell. The country was ranked 5th among world’s top 20 happiest countries.

Spain (2005)

In 2009, a survey carried out by OnePoll.com found that Spain has the best lovers in the world.

South Africa (2006)

Because you are gay, you are NOT a second-class citizen – you have full rights in this new South Africa including the right to make a fuss.

Norway (2009) According to the Global Peace Index, Norway is the most peaceful country.

Sweden (2009)

The LGBT community parties on the streets of Stockholm every summer for 7 days during the Stockholm Pride Week. Sweden was voted Best Country in the World on July 5. The Swedish people were also voted Nicest People on the Planet.

Argentina (2010)

Argentina’s capital has been termed the “gay mecca of Latin America” and is one of the 6 Best Places To Retire Overseas If You’re Gay.

Iceland (2010)

Iceland today is not only the second Happiest Country in the World, it is also the Most Feminist Country in the World.

Portugal (2010)

The residency programme of Portugal has been ranked the best residency programme in the world by Henley and Partners, a residency and citizenship planning office.

The other 10 countries that legalized same-sex marriage before the United States, and are doing pretty okay with it, are: Denmark (2012), Brazil (2013), England and Wales (2013), France (2013), New Zealand (2013), Uruguay (2013), Luxembourg (2014), Scotland (2014), Ireland (2015), and Greenland (2015).

    • They already did if they legalized gay marriage it is against my religion that it is right. America was once under god but now they can change their pledge to “one nation under the government.” Fuck america inequality, racism, unjustice, and no one does anything about it.

        • Ok, first of all, the Bible says to not take the Lord’s name in vain. Second of all, who are you to judge if someone is a “real christian” or not?

    • If you believe and fight for something you’re already a member of a religion, show some fucking respect, just because people think different from you, that doesn’t mean you can tear away their ideologies, beliefs and freedoms.

      • You say that, “show some respect” but what about the equality marriage couples that are suing Christian business for not providing services? What about NOT tearing away THEIR ideologies, beliefs and freedoms. An Oregon couple got sued for 135000 for emotional damage because they would not bake same sex wedding cake.. had to close their small family business because they believe differently. Now why couldn’t this couple go to a bakery that was on the same page with them? Why sue out of spite? Why shut down the business? You say all you want is freedom to love who you want, but we will see jut how this goes down in the close future….

    • I’m totally supportive of LGBT couples and marriages, not so much supportive of Gay Pride parades. While I can understand that these are a celebration of their life being accepted now, I feel that it creates an us and them mentality, LGBT against Heterosexuals. I personally feel that the LGBT community needs to an in an S (for straight) or H (for hetero) into the LGBT in order not to create the divide and to help promote that we are the same, without that anti-gays are going to gain further strength from those who are unsure how to react.

  2. Correlation is not causation. I’m not against affording people their rights as individuals, but to say that “such and such country has gay marriage = other variable” is not necessarily correct.

    • I think you’re missing the point. The article isn’t trying to imply that legal gay marriage is the cause of the good things in those countries. It’s just a rebuttal to all the conservative paranoia and fear-mongering claiming that the ruling is going to lead to the rapid decline of our country. Obviously gay marriage does not cause anarchy and hell on Earth in the countries where it’s already been legal for years. This just proves who completely unfounded and ridiculous the uberconservative arguments are.

    • The article is not stating that gay marriage = v. It is stating quite the opposite: gay marriage is not going to bring gloom and doom, and then listing the countries that are doing well in spite of allowing gay marriage. It doesn’t mean that they are doing well because they allow it.

    • Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this way. My thought is exact. When my eyes landed on that picture my first impression was “what in the world?” Its quite dumb. But I guess its their freedom to express themselves as they wish…. Even if they’re comparing humans to plugs…. *siggghhh* humanity.

    • But that’s just the thing with gay marriage. Gay people only make up a small percentage of the population so it won’t have an effect at all on human population. Also, these gay people would not have married women so what’s your point?

    Its just not biologically appropriate…
    Who ever choose to be gay is their own choice.
    This is not the natural way. God does not meant this for us to do if not God just look at the biology. A species cannot do this to itself. Its just very irregular.

      • We can all choose what we want to be, nobody is born gay, however some people can be born with mental or emotional disabilities and should be treated.

  10. It doesn’t work in the past, it might be okay in the present, and it might have an unforeseeable consequences in the future. It’s working because the amount of people who are an homosexual is in the minority. But when homosexuality is growing to an unprecedented amount there will be issues of domestic inequality, under-aged sexual activities, moral depravity, decreasing population, complete destruction of economy and finance. Many those countries that have a successful outcome of same sex marriage is because they’re small, minor like Portugal, Iceland, Netherlands, Sweden, Argentina, Spain, Norway compare to the United States of America.
