When you’re running late for the next plane you catch, or you’re pale because you’ve just had a shave, or a late night, before your plane is due, be prepared for more additional security as you board your flight.
According to the latest checklist, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ramped up their cause for suspicion to include excessive blinking, wearing inappropriate attire, running late for a flight, or simply having the yawns and acting bored. All these signs are now indicators for the TSA to act upon your “suspicious behavior”.
There are several sections on the list, each having a check list and an operating points system to complete. Section 1 is an Environmental Baseline where the observer provides a “brief narrative” of the environmental situation. Section 3 includes unusual items which appear within a reasonable limit, detonating explosives, rope, gels, wire, GPS and other items. However, Section 2 is more detailed with an “Observation and Behavior Analysis” which includes Stress, Fear and Deception Factors. Section 4 is focused on Signs of Deception.
Sections 2 and 4 are highlighting some everyday behaviors that effect most people.
Some suspicious activities listed in Section 2:
- Arrive late for a flight
- Avoid eye contact with security personnel
- Facial flushing while undergoing screening
- Faster eye blinking with individual
- Widely open staring eyes
- Inappropriate attire for insulation
- Appears to be confused or disorientated
- Bag appears heavier than expected
- Rubbing of hands
Some of the suspicious activities listed in Section 4 are:
- Gestures don’t match the verbal message
- Gazing down
- Lacking details about purpose of trip
- Overly specific with answers
- Delayed responses to questioning
Section 5 is a calculation of points. If you manage to accrue 6 points throughout the checklist, or tick 2 criteria in Section 4 or 4 criteria in Section 2, expect further security detainment and questioning. However, if you are part of a family, married or over 50, deduct 2 points for each.
The leaked 92-point check list is available here.
Please fasten your seat belts, take note of your exit points, and have a nice trip.
