The Free Thought Project has published a very disturbing video in which a man is seen being murdered by a police officer, in broad daylight, in Salt Lake City-Utah.
The incident is said to have happened in August 2014; the victim has been identified as Dillon Taylor and the reckless officer as Bron Cruz. It is said the shooting happened because Cruz confused Taylor for a possible criminal in the area.
According to Jerrail Taylor’s, Taylor’s brother, account of the incident, Dillon, Jerrail, and their cousin were exiting the 7-Eleven in an area where the police were searching for a suspect who had allegedly been waving a gun around.
He said when they exited the convenience store, they were surrounded by police officers and were ordered to show their hands. He and his cousin stopped and complied with the police’s orders. But Taylor, in that moment, was listening to music and did not hear the officers’ orders and kept walking.
Officer Cruz then thought Taylor matched the description of the alleged criminal. He then approached Taylor with another officer. Cruz told Taylor to get on the ground, while the other officer ordered him to put his hands on his head.
Taylor, obviously confused, did not know what to do until Cruz approached him further and shot him at a very close range.
“He couldn’t hear them, so he just kept walking. Then … they had guns pointed at his face. That’s when he turned off the music. I saw them point guns at my brother’s face, and I knew what was going to happen. He got confused, he went to pull up his pants to get on the ground, and they shot him,” Jerrail told the SLC Tribune.
A report by the Daily Kos provides a detailed breakdown of the 7-minute video as follows:
At 0:17, Officer Bron Cruz gets out of his vehicle. You will notice people confused by his presence.
At 0:22, Officer Cruz walks past two men who were friends with Dillon Taylor.
At 0:24, Officer Cruz walks behind Taylor, who is wearing a white T-shirt and is listening to music.
At 0:33, we see the officer has his gun drawn and is yelling at Taylor, who’s holding his sagging pants up and does not appear to hear Cruz.
At 0:36, the officer shoots Taylor. It would be fatal.
Starting at 0:41, you will notice the headphone cord coming out of Taylor’s pocket.
At 0:48, you will see that the headphones were clearly going up to Taylor’s ears.
At 0:52, the officer asks Dillon to “give me your hands,” but Taylor is already near death. His friends begin screaming and crying in the background.
At 1:03, the officer handcuffs Taylor.
At 1:48, the officer turns Taylor over, making the headphones visible. The officer then states “it’s clear”—meaning that Taylor was actually unarmed.
At 2:54, the officer turns Taylor completely over, keeping him handcuffed. He begins talking to Taylor, trying to get him to talk. Taylor appears to be very close to death and is completely covered in blood.
At 4:56, the officer is rummaging through Taylor’s pockets instead of providing any first aid.
The Free Thought Project said the body cam footage was released in September 2014, but was edited to stop just after the shots were fired.
It is believed the police department did not want the public to see what happened, but had no alternative after Taylor’s family pressed for the full footage to be released for the public.

IF this were to happen to me, I would take my hands out of my pants..plain and simple. In this scenario, both parties were at fault:
1) The victim not taking the hands off his pants when the officer(s) clearly asked him to (as what Mitchell said, for all they know he had a gun)
2) The officer for not providing first aid on the victim AFTER he got shot. He should have at least acknowledged him and tried to talk to him to assure his stability.

Look at the footage, he had ear-buds and did take his hands out after he turned around and as he did he was shot. He complied but it ended in his death anyway. The cop asked him to take his hands out, did as they asked once he noticed. Send them to a maximum detention facility and tell the inmates hes a cop, let the criminals deal with the criminal. This guy was never confirmed to be the suspect they were looking for, and never once indicated that he had a weapon. Why was the police officer’s FIRST instinct to SHOOT A MAN DEAD, instead of, oh I don’t know….INVESTIGATE?!
I could say that maybe if, right after seeing the gun, he would put his hands up because that’s what should be programmed into us by now, and that would prevent him from being shot.
However, that becomes irrelevant when it’s made clear that the officer shot him in the chest, a lethal shot, without knowing for certain he was a threat. I’m of the firm belief that if an officer feels the need to shoot someone, it should be debilitating but not lethal, like in the lower leg.
The ONLY time an officer should shoot to kill is if someone is without a doubt presenting an immediate threat to those around them. Logic would dictate that shooting someone in the torso could quickly kill them.
This makes me think that officer training isn’t extensive enough, because that should be one of the first things they’re taught. A police officer’s job is not only to uphold justice but to do so while keeping people safe and alive.

Don’t judge me to hard for this but this is what I see. I see a group of guys walking out of a store to the left side of the red truck. The cop pulls up and the guy in the white shirt leaves the group to walk in another direction away from the officer. The cop points a gun at him telling him to put his hands up and the guy sees him but continues to to walk backwards and looks like he either has his hands in his pants or is pulling something out as you see him lift his shirt.
I keep seeing “he had head phones on, he was listening to music.” Now we are assuming he couldn’t hear the officers because his music was on.
So the guy in a white shirt was in the store with two other guys listening to his music, walks out of the store, sees a police officer, turns around and walks in the opposite direction, sees a gun pointed at him but continues to walk backwards away. That doesn’t make sense to me. There would be a reason for an officer to pull right up to the front of a store and quickly exit his vehicle. There would be a reason why the guy in the white shirt would see a police officer and walk the other way.
I completely agree that the officer should not have shot but if a cop has a gun pointed at me, I would stop and instantly put my hands up.
