Ricardo Dominguez, a professor at UC San Diego has been teaching the same course for 11 years now. Dominguez has not had any problems with the requirements of his final exam up until now, parents are furious after hearing some rumors saying that their children need to get naked to pass the final exam.
Dominguez seems to not find any problems with this as he is also going to be naked along side the students taking the exam whilst administrating them.
The class that these students are taking is the UC San Diego’s visual arts 104A, also known as “Performing the Self”. For students to achieve their final grade they need to find and demonstrate their “erotic selves”, this is done with the lights of and the room only lot with candles. Needless to say, this can be very degrading regardless of the professor also being naked.
Parents are going furious about this and starting to share their thoughts of it to social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. One parent told ABC 10 News that, “It bothers me, I’m not sending [my daughter] to school for this,”. “It makes me sick to my stomach”
On YikYak, an anonymous location-based social network site, other students are also sharing their own thoughts about this. “The media is all in an uproar over the VA prof. that makes his student get naked for his final. Bitch, that is the easiest A you are ever gonna get a UCSD, be grateful!”
Dr. Jordan Crandall, the chairman of the visual arts department, stated that being naked is not actually a requirmet to pass the final exam, but they are however required to be metaphorically “naked”. Apparently, before the class had started students knew that this was a requirmet.
One mother, who wants to keep her identity hidden, stated that being naked was not a known requirmet nor was it not mentioned before the course began, “Nothing was ever explained, nothing was ever stipulated prior to Thursday,”
According Crandall, it is possible to be ‘naked’ without actually taking your clothes off and this can be achieved in a huge number of ways, for example showing one of your weaknesses or hidden emotions can be classed as “naked”.
Dominguez said, “At the very end of the class, we’ve done several gestures, they have to nude gesture. The prompt is to speak about or do a gesture to create an installation that says, ‘what is more you than you are,'”
